EX TC ESTHER IS COMING EAST, BRING IT ONNNN!!! Big rain is forecast this week across Central Australia, South West QLD, NSW, the ACT and VIC. 50-100mm totals look likely for many areas with locally higher falls very possible!
Currently on Sunday afternoon the system is located in the Kimberley district WA and heading east. It is forecast to enter Central NT on Tuesday then turn South East reaching South West QLD on Wednesday with heavy rain and storms. It keeps on going into NSW on Thursday and Friday before exiting it's epic journey across Australia which started out in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Now keep this in mind... Inland NSW, the ACT & VIC a separate low pressure trough is forecast to develop on Tuesday with rain and SEVERE storms then continue on Wednesday and Thursday AHEAD of EX TC Esther. Some welcome flooding is expected with this rainfall especially in the Murray-Darling basin. Image via Weatherzone current rainfall forecast totals for the week. Full details for WA, NT, QLD, NSW, ACT and VIC which include Esther track maps, storm maps, rainfall maps and detailed write-ups are available on our website > https://higginsstormchasing.com/higgins-storm-chasing-membership/

Wow where do we start? There is potential that ex cyclone Esther which will move west through the base of the Top end of NT then is expected to push into the Kimberley and northern interior of WA as a possible landphoon, a landphoon is weather system that has characteristics of a low grade cyclone on land!

Meanwhile an upper trough that the models have been going on for days to develop over south eastern Australia is now believed to be strong enough and also west enough to drag this landphoon down!

Where this landphoon paths it’s track will see heavy to flooding rains. Days ago the models had a ridge strong enough to steer the landphoon west into the Indian Ocean but the ridge is expected to disappear allowing the upper trough to capture this landphoon.

Now please read carefully... It is very likely parts of northern NT and northern WA down to Broome area to see flooding rains and damaging winds this is pratfalls a guarantee.

Then it gets interesting... The tropical low or landphoon is then expected to turn south east as the broad upper trough captures it! What does this mean? Widespread heavy rain moving down into central and southern NT and across large parts of central Australia. Much like we have seen over inland parts of Queensland of late.

What the tropical depression does after that depends on the location and strength of the upper trough though tonight there is a tendency by all models to move it further south east or south as it runs downward along the eastern side of the broad upper trough. Anywhere east of here will be very wet possibly flooding wet! But will it be SA? VIC? NSW? TAS? Western QLD? Could be anyone’s guess, could be some of these areas if not all!

Here is the latest ECMWF model tonight tracking ex Esther/landphoon over the course of the next week. This will wiggle run to run but as long as the upper trough captures this system large parts of Australia will profit from large rainfalls!

Also an image of the accumulated rainfall for the next 10 days by the ECMWF model across the Nation.
