I’m thrilled to be presenting “Life in Glen Davis 1938–1952” at the Mudgee Library — a deep dive into the people, industry, and stories that shaped our remarkable valley.
As the flyer says, this talk will “explore the people, industry, and stories that shaped Glen Davis (and the wider Capertee Valley) during the years of 1938 to 1952.”
You’ll also hear how “families in the remote, yet remarkable, shale oil town thrived, struggled, and left their mark on Australian history.”

90 years ago (1936) was a pivotal year in the chain of events that led directly to the creation of the Glen Davis Shale Oil Works.
This Act created the legal and financial foundation for the Glen Davis shale oil project, one of Australia’s largest industrial undertakings before WWII. It shows how seriously the government took fuel security and how much public money and legislative support went into making the project possible.
Over coming weeks we will examine the detail of this gazette notice.

A memorable tour on 18/4/2026 with this visitor who really connected with the site, and knows The Ted Noffs Foundation. I mention this because Ted Noffs was a Reverend in Glen Davis in the period 1945-1948.
