A solid start to the East Kimberley wet season has left Lake Argyle's spillway overflowing at its earliest point on record.

The dam, more than 3,000 kilometres north of Perth on the Western Australia–Northern Territory border, reached capacity and began overflowing on January 19.

The Water Corporation said it was 100 millimetres above full supply, and levels had stabilised.

The dam reached its 2024 high point of 97.7 metres in April last year and stayed high for several months.

Water Corporation North West regional manager Sharon Broad said that was likely a factor in the early overflow.

"It has been so full in previous years … It only stopped overflowing in October last year," she said.

Ms Broad said the overflow was a welcome sight after the dam reached its lowest water level in 40 years in 2020.

"There's lots of water for the irrigation customers and to run the hydro power station and to keep the lower Ord [River] healthy as well," she said.
