As the name suggests this tree is a native of Africa where plants in the wild are a protected species. It is found in the wooded grasslands of Africa. This tree is popular because of its hardiness, non-invasive root system, and resistance to termites, drought and frost. It adapts to extreme heat and cold, grows well in most soil conditions and will grow faster in sandy soils. Due to its compact si
ze this tree is highly suited to the even the smallest garden. It also makes a fantastic Bonsai Project, or grows well in a pot on a sunny patio, veranda or terrace. Once established they thrive on neglect; sometimes the prettiest Wisterias are found on abandoned properties. The African Wisteria produces drooping, fragrant, pea-like flowers with a sweet mellow fragrance. The blooms can vary in shade from violet, to lavender or mauve; often covering the whole tree and generally flowering from spring to early summer. The wood, which is highly sought after by carpenters, makes excellent furniture and works well on a lathe. The termite resistant properties make it an ideal wood for fence posts. The roots are used medicinally to alleviate stomach problems and the inner bark used to treat abdominal cramps.
