Yes! Matthew competed in the 2024 Australian Nationals XC Classic race on Friday and placed 2nd! Such a great result for him as his focus is Skate technique because of Biathlon. It was a beautiful blue sky day, but because of poor snow conditions, the race was reduced to 1.65km comprising of two loops. A sprint from beginning to end! There was a gnarly hill that had quite a few athletes slipping and sliding, a good downhill and a 100metre flattish finish to the Finish line. All raced on soft, sugary snow.

Matthew raced brilliantly, showing great technique and speed. With a time of 5:45.70 minutes he was 1:09.40 behind first place, and he beat third by 1.20 seconds! So close. And, the three athletes on the podium were the Australian male Biathlon from the recent Winter Youth Olympics in South Korea. Well done all🙂

AUSTRALIAN CHAMPION U18M BIATHLON MASS START!!!

He did it! Matthew won the Mass Start U18M race yesterday and achieved another goal becoming the Australian Champion for this distance race (10km). He represented Buller Biathlon admirably along with Boris Stanish (also Buller Biathlon - lead athlete), who took out the U22M and Open Male division. There was 1 1/2 min between Matthew and second, and he was 3 minutes ahead of third!!

Thanks to the wonderful work and coaching from Agnieszka Cyl (Head Coach Polish National team). She delivered a fantastic two week training camp and race weekend of support. It was easy to see the improvement in all the athletes who attended.

There’s no more Biathlon races in Aus this year, (Aus Jnr xc and Interschools Nationals still to go), so it’s train, train, train to be ready for Overseas training and racing, Dec/Jan. He is so happy with his life…but there’s still school work!

Yes!! A fantastic result for Matthew - 2nd in the U18 Male Biathlon Sprint - Australian Championships, and . Tomorrow is the Distance (12.5km) his preferred event. 🤞!

The National Championships Super Sprint was held on the weekend at Whiskey Flat, Mt Hotham. A great day with lots of laughter and racing. Matthew placed second in the U 18 male event. So lucky to have the lovely Agnieszka Cyl (Polish Head Coach) train athletes from the National, National Junior team and Development team in a two week training camp.

What a great yesterday in the Mt Buller village square! As part of the 100th birthday celebrations, Mt Buller recognised a few of their upcoming junior athletes who have been competing overseas. Boris Stanish kicked it off with a great overview of life as a junior elite athlete and a description of Biathlon, for those who were not familiar with the sport…everyone! Then Dave had a short interview with Matthew talking about his Youth Olympic Games experience and future goals. Next we had two TBR kids (slopestyle and moguls), then Lara Walsh (snowboard x) and finished with Max Kelly (alpine slalom and GS). There were others invited as well, but they were not on the mountain. Great to see these very talented juniors recognised and celebrated, and a reminder that Mt Buller punches above its weight for snow talent🙂

What a day/ trip! In less time than it takes to drive from Melbourne to Canberra for Rollerski races, we travelled from Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Germany! Stayed the night in Bratislava (Slovakia) and decided to make a side trip to Hungary because it was only 15 minutes away. One old church and a stop by Border guards (that hasn’t happened in a while), and we were back on the road to Munich. One more day in Germany, then we fly to Estonia for the Junior Workd Champs🙂
