The streetscape disaster. Please read to the end. So far I have stayed quiet about the chaos on Thompson avenue. This has been a farce since the council proposed it. They asked for people’s advice and didn’t really take it. The whole project was fast tracked because the Bass Shire Council suddenly got a grant from federal government. By fast tracking the project I believe they have cut corners on how to proceed with the construction whilst coursing as little impact to the local businesses and their customers. A lot of the works could have been done at night as this part of Thompson avenue is not a residential road. The council argument against this would be the extra cost in wages and lighting. My view is that if they had postponed the project for a couple of years they would have increased the bass shire budget which could have helped towards the night works costs. The council seem to believe that by them saving money they are saving the rate payers money really there not because they will go over budget. What they also don’t look at is the cost in losses to small businesses for the council to save money. What most people out there probably don’t know is there is no compensation to these small businesses, not even a rent reduction for the year.
Now let’s talk about the bass shire council and some of their employees. Well they lie, they skirt over the truth and I don’t believe they are capable of carrying out a project without f###xxg it up. A lot of the additional cost to the projects are cause by incompetence. I have been blatantly lied to by council employees and I wish I had kept a paper trail and recording of all conversations since this all started a couple of years ago. I would like to point out that we should not blame the construction workers, I believe they have had to put up with a bit as well.
All though Sue and I are retiring and all this is a major inconvenience to us and our customers it is definitely more of an inconvenience to the local businesses on this part off Thompson Avenue. I am happy to get involved with any discussions to help you all get some sort of compensation, rates or whatever.
