Camphor Laurel variety

Three spoons made from camphor laurel - highlighting what a varied and wonderful wood it is for woodworking and spoon carving.

The long handled spoon is 195mm, the small one 63mm.

In recent times, I have been using my instagram account for my spoon postings, and only occasionally using this page.
To keep up to date, perhaps take a look at on insta - or my other fb page, Jeff Fraser.

Holey Budgeroo Spoon

Lucky to find a small piece of budgeroo in a crate of wood that had been submerged in floods some time back.

It was much the worse for wear, making it an interesting challenge. Initially I thought about working around the many large grub holes, but was encouraged to work with them instead.

A tree that had life, sustained life, and still lives on......

Red Cedar Spoon

Cabinetry off cuts from my good friends at Cooroora institute.

Such a beautiful wood with its deep rich colour and distinctive grain. An Australian native and one of our more desirable furniture woods. Very desirable also, for this spoon maker.

This little beauty is190mm tip to tip, or 7.5 inches.

Spalted Mango Spoon.

This has to be the loveliest piece of mango wood I've come across. Amazing colours and the curly or ringed grain is an absolute treat.

The easy lines of the spoon allow the wood to shine.

Huon Heart.

Hearts seem to have become a 'thing' for me in recent times.

I hadn't really been contemplating doing spoons and hearts, or spoons with hearts but got caught in a bit of light banter about soppy heart spoons.

Even then it still wasn't on my radar but I came across a donated off cut of huon, ideally shaped for the purpose.

A really gorgeous piece of tortured, burnt huon, wavy grain in the bowl area, and remnant charcoal scarring on the handle.

It all came together so beautifully, I couldn't have been happier.

Camphor Laurel Spoon

Perhaps about the right size to be a serving spoon. A bin retrieval, it has already served me well, keeping me interested and entertained for several days.

The raw wood showed a hint of grain, but what it produced once finished was much much more that what I'd expected. A lovely ripple of grain across the bowl, the hint of a face too. And even the handle has some delightful ripple effect.

235 mms / 9.5 inches tip to tip. The bowl is 100mm × 65mm Finished in food safe Kunos Oil.

Huon Spoon

I'm pretty sure this was a sliver of off cut from the huon trunk that was provided for the last Spoonies in the Tweed.

Not much to look at in its raw state and it had taken me ages to conceptualize how to proceed with it. Actually, I still didn't have a plan at all, I just started nibbling away, cutting a bit here and a bit there - and bit more. A bit wider where the bowl needed to be; a bit skinnier to start defining a handle.

Eventually it became more spoon-like, and the form began to flow.

The wood had been split along a crack line in which there had been some organic growth, staining the wood thus providing a dramatic contrast around the rim of the bowl and along the handle. It also produced a more yellow tinge to the adjacent wood,

'Viking' Spoon

Made from Conkerberry, design collaboration with Erica J.

A smallish spoon, at 120mm / 4.5inches - the end piece cut off from my previous Conkerberry Spoon. So, not a great deal of wood to work with and the extra challenge of working around the inward curve at the end of the handle from where the other spoon had been cut out.

The curve suggested a moon type crescent so that was one start point. The other was to somehow retain a flash of the turquoise resin. An odd alignment between bowl and handle. Then the crescent was too irregular to make a perfect symmetrical moon so one end now curves up while the other curves down, and has a split.

An exercise in patience, pushing the process, and being grateful for creative input.

Silky Oak Spoon

One from a while back.

An unusual spalting running through the wood, and more unusually it seemed to add some additional density to the wood rather than making it softer or p***y.

The weird design of the handle is a consequence of other work cut out of the original block of wood.

Strange, but strangely ok.

Blackbean Teaspoon

Pretty sure this is the very last piece of this wood - but I thought that last time.

Lovely creamy colour with some fiddleback patches and the striking darker ripples.

The design was dictated by the shape of the small off-cut scrap I had available. My initial thought was to have a hole in the handle but the wood looked and felt so good so I left it whole.

It might appear that there is a zig zag crack in the bowl - not so, it is just one of the ripples. Fascinating what nature can do.

Mistletoe Stick Teaspoon.

As well as this spoon has turned out, it is not what I had intended.

The small branch was protruding from a lump on a mistletoe. After studying the branch and lump, I thought I could saw the whole thing off and make a spoon with a substantial bowl and skinny stick handle. Unfortunately the stick was not securely attached to the burl and it detached with just a small lip.

Only just enough wood to form a bowl so my large spoon shrunk to teaspoon size.

Quite a delicate little spoon, with polished inside bowl and natural texture on the underside.

Not sure what to do with the little lump of mistletoe that no longer had a handle. Maybe a small bowl to go with it and keep them together.
