“Ah well, I suppose it has come to this” – Ned Kelly, 1880.

Over the last six years we have continually had to deal with people taking advantage of the free green waste disposal that we have had in place. We have had bunches of treated pine posts, multiple lawnmowers, eskies, household wood, bricks, concrete, plastic toys, mattresses, televisions, microwaves and even asbestos sheeting dropped off (and usually hidden amongst the green waste), at our site.

Just this week, there were two lawnmowers left and a large piece of concrete, which has been the catalyst for this decision. As hopefully you can appreciate, the rubbish that is left can make its way through the mulcher which severely damages the equipment. Over the years, this has cost us thousands of dollars in lost revenue.

We now have security cameras in place which will hopefully alleviate the issue of rubbish being disposed of at Redgum Organics.

We hope all of our current clients will still appreciate the service we provide and continue to support us with our business and we sincerely thank those customers who continually do the right thing and visit us regularly.

It’s such a shame that we are continually finding that rubbish has been dumped in our compost. Please take your own rubbish to the tip and pay to dispose of it yourself. Green waste only.

It was so great to have the students from St. Mary's Cohuna come out to the farm for a visit last term. The topic of their inquiry unit was ‘Sustainability’ and this was a great opportunity for the students to be able to see some sustainable practices happening and how making simple changes can be so beneficial for the environment.

Here's a quick little snippet of the mulching process. You can see the size of the green waste going into the mulcher. It would take a long time for those logs to break down into small enough pieces to use in the compost if we were to leave them as they are. This just quickens the beginning of the composting process for us.

It's been a big couple of days out at our compost site with over 1000 metres of green waste mulched. This is the beginning of the composting process, where the larger trees and logs need to be mulched first, in order to begin breaking down much quicker. It was a beautiful Autumn night, working until after sunset.

Did you know?

The process of making the compost that we sell is a complex and time consuming one. Manure is sourced from local farms (including cow, pig and chicken manure) and along with sawdust, green waste and hay, it is mixed together. It takes approximately 6 months to cook and cure with a constant, continual process of wetting down and turning over. In that time the pile has halved in size as it is broken down. The temperature can get up to 65°C which is hot enough to kill all pathogens and w**d seeds. The piles are turned 5 times in the process of curing and are made to the Australian Standard (AS 4454).

We have compost for sale - $40 per metre or $120 for 3 metres including delivery. Call Travis (0417059938) to arrange for contactless delivery.
