Today, 3rd June, we honor the incredible legacy of Torres Strait Islander Eddie Koiki Mabo and the groundbreaking High Court ruling in Mabo v Queensland (No. 2). โš–๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ
On this exact day in 1992, the High Court of Australia finally overturned the legal myth of terra nulliusโ€”the false claim that this land belonged to no one. This historic decision officially recognized what First Nations people always knew: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have profound, enduring rights to their land. ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโœŠ๐Ÿพ
Tragically, Eddie Koiki Mabo passed away in January 1992, just months before the monumental ruling that would forever bear his name and reshape Australia. Today, his legacy burns bright in every single step we take toward truth, recognition, and justice.๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

NQLC congratulates the Djungan People on their fifth determination of native title. ๐ŸŽ‰โœจ

On Tuesday, 28 April 2026, in Brisbane, the Federal Court of Australia recognised the Djungan Peopleโ€™s native title over their Country. The members of the Applicant travelled to Brisbane to attend this significant occasion in person.

The determination area covers approximately 130 square km of land to the west of Ngarrabullgan (Mount Mulligan) and north of Thornborough. It is adjacent to the Djungan #2 and #3 native title determinations.

NQLC acknowledges the efforts of all Djungan People, including those who provided evidence to support the claim, the members of the Applicant, and Djungan elders past and present, without whom this outcome could not have been achieved.

Today, North Queensland Land Council proudly acknowledges National Close the Gap Day and we honour the courage and resilience of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. How far we've come but also a reminder of the ongoing work in health, education, employment and general wellbeing that lies ahead.

Closing the Gap is about walking alongside communities, amplifying First Nations voices to drive meaningful, longโ€‘term change. ๐Ÿค๐ŸŒฟ

Together, we keep working toward fairness, respect, and better futures for all. โœŠโœจ

๐ŸŒฟ Eastern Kuku Yalanji #2 Community Meetings

Last month members of our Claims Team hosted a series of community meetings with Eastern Kuku Yalanji People.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ Locations visited:
Mossman โ€ข Wujal Wujal โ€ข Cairns โ€ข Yarrabah โ€ข Townsville โ€ข Palm Island

It was a valuable opportunity to share information and updates on the progression of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji #2 native title claim.

While in Wujal Wujal, we were fortunate to be taken to Bana Yirri (Bloomfield River Waterfall) ๐Ÿ’ง and Mt Pearce Lookout ๐ŸŒ„.

We were also shown the Soap Bush. When you pick a few leaves, crush them in your hands ๐ŸŒฑ and add a little water ๐Ÿ’ง, the plant foams up into a natural soap. It even has a strong, clean smell, almost like Dettol! ๐Ÿงผโœจ

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, shared their time, and welcomed the team. And special thanks to Reagan Kulka aka Bobby and Travis Gibson for taking us on country.

๐ŸŽจ Meet Marita โ€“ Our 2024โ€“2025 Annual Report Artist!

Weโ€™re proud to feature the incredible work of Marita Budden, a proud Aboriginal woman from the Atherton Tablelands with cultural connections to the Jirrbalngan (Jirrbal) and Ngadjan-jii (Ngadjan) rainforest peoples, on the cover of our 2024โ€“2025 Annual Report. ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

Maritaโ€™s artistic journey began in the 1970s, when she won first prize for abstract art at her local show โ€” a moment that sparked a lifelong passion for creating. Raised by Kevin and Elsie Go Sam, respected Aboriginal pioneers of the Silver Valley tin mining industry, Marita grew up surrounded by strong cultural values, creativity, and deep connection to Country.

Her work spans painting, jewellery, textiles, badge making, greeting cards, and souvenirs, often featuring designs inspired by her family. Maritaโ€™s contemporary style blends traditional influences with vibrant modern expression, drawing on rainforest landscapes, flora, fauna, and cultural stories. Through her art, she aims to uplift, inspire, and celebrate identity, diversity, and the enduring strength of Aboriginal culture. ๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒบ

It has been a pleasure working with Marita, whose professionalism, creativity, and cultural pride shine through every detail of her artwork. We are honoured to showcase her stunning piece in this yearโ€™s Annual Report. ๐Ÿ’›
