Hema Maps has always understood the importance of accurate research, regular updating and substantial fieldwork to produce the most reliable product available. Henry and Margaret Boegheim, the founders of Hema Maps, are adventurers who love maps, and know that the best maps help people discover out-of-the-way places, and more importantly, get back safely. These days they’ve left the running of the

business to their son Rob, who began with the company in 1988 and has played an integral part in developing the Hema Maps' extensive range of award-winning products. Rob pioneered GPS field checking of outback roads in 1996 and since then he and various ‘Map Patrol’ teams have field checked over 300,000km of outback roads and tracks.

Out on the tracks, there’s always something wild to discover 🌿🦘🦅

From blooming wildflowers and ancient gums to wedgetails soaring overhead and roos darting across dusty tracks at sunset, Australia’s wildlife - plant or animal - are a huge part of why we head bush in the first place.

One of the best parts of getting off the blacktop is seeing it all where it belongs - out in the wild, raw and untamed. The bush has a way of keeping you alert, grounded and constantly looking around the next bend.

These are just a few of the locals we’ve crossed paths with out on the tracks. What’s the wildest thing you’ve spotted while touring Australia? 🗺️🔥

Big Lap Planning – Tip 3: Plan Water, Fuel & Safety

The trip of a lifetime is even better when you make it home safely. A little planning goes a long way when you’re heading remote - especially across Australia’s outback tracks and long-distance touring routes.

Here are 8 simple tips to help keep your Big Lap safe, smooth and stress-free 👇

💧 Water comes first - nothing matters more
💧 Carry more water than you think you’ll need
💧 10L per person, per day is a solid baseline
🗺️ Always carry paper maps as a backup to digital navigation
🦘 Finish driving before dusk to reduce animal-strike risk
📶 Mobile coverage disappears quickly outside major towns
📻 A UHF radio is essential for outback travel
🛰️ Satellite communicators or PLBs are critical backup in remote areas

Preparation is everything when touring Australia and the right planning means more time enjoying the adventure.

3 weeks of dust, 1m+ corrugations, campfires and banter on the UHF - the Moon Tours Coast to Coast South to North Tour has finally rolled into the finish line 🔥🚐🗺️

A cold swim at Carawine Gorge was the perfect way to wash off the bulldust after crossing some of this country’s best touring country.

The tracks were rough, the camps were unreal and the stories got better every night around the fire. But like every good trip, it’s the people you meet along the way that make it one to remember.

This is what touring Australia is all about. Now’s the time to get out there and explore.

The Pilbara has a way of making you feel small - ancient gorges, iron-rich cliffs, hidden waterholes and rugged tracks that remind you why WA touring is so special.

Recently, Hema Maps Alpha #12 Ashley has been exploring deep through the Pilbara.

From Python Pool through toward George Gorge in Millstream Chichester National Park, Ashley crossed rocky creek beds and wound through some seriously spectacular (and sometimes challenging) country on Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Country.

332 drops of rain cleared the flies for about 15 seconds 😂 and the colours afterwards were absolutely magic.

Ashley also clocked up some fresh track data for Hema Maps 👌
