This beautiful John Hicks & Co sideboard is now complete, and what a transformation it is 🥰
From the 1860’s, John Hicks started his small furniture factory right here in Brisbane and went on to become quite the furniture artist and maker by the 1930’s. I actually consulted a local Antique Dealer before I started on this piece just to make sure I wasn’t going to be decreasing any value. Sadly I was met with the advice of ‘people don’t value pieces like this anymore and they are not worth much today’ This really did motivate me more than ever to bring some love and a total refresh to this gorgeous piece so that it could be appreciated in someone’s home, and better blend with today’s decor.
👉 A full strip down of the old shellac was done, and careful sanding inside and out - a mix of orbital and hand sanding.
👉 To help minimise the red tones from the Silky Oak timber, I applied a custom tan paint wash all over using
👉 Two coats of a matte polyurethane sealer was applied all over the outside
👉 Original ruby red velvet, which lines the inside of the two drawers, was cleaned and a little re-glueing of the edges that had come away.
👉 Original mirror was cleaned and reinstalled.
👉 Original locks were cleaned and made to work again. A new skeleton key was needed as the original key was missing.
👉 Brand new brass escutcheons were installed to tidy up the keyhole area.
👉 Inside and back were treated to glorious coats of a nourishing beeswax mix to bring hydration and protection to the areas.
I absolutely LOVED working on this piece. Even more special that it was made in my home city 🥰
