This really is our heart and what we are about. We endeavor to bring more good content to help support healthy families.
The work that happens in the home is some of the best work there is. It's in the small, seemingly in-between moments where character is shaped and our future is formed. The question is, what kinds of characters are we shaping and what kind of future will they inhabit?
Friends, we must be aware of the cultural water we're swimming in. Did you know that in 2019, people spent on average more than 10 times the amount of time watching TV as they did reading? In fact, watching TV is the 3rd highest personal use of time, ranking just after sleeping and working*. We sleep, we work, and we watch TV.
We don't share this to guilt anyone... but rather to get you thinking—to get us thinking. Not all TV is bad! And spending some time being entertained can be a positive thing, but...
How are our entertainment habits informing our hearts and minds? How are they informing our desires? Our relationships? Our knowledge of God and the things of God?
It's a convicting thought to say the least.
The good news is that we don't *have to* fill our eyes and ears with anything we don't choose to! Next to sleep (the amount of quality sleep is decreasing) and work (the amount of work is increasing), our next greatest use of time is our leisure time. How can we rearrange our leisure time to better reflect our priorities as God's people?
Instead of recommending "3 clever steps to stop watching TV", how about this: can we just pray?
As believers, we have the profound privilege of being able to pray and ask God to transform our hearts and desires and make us *hunger* and *thirst* for more of Him and His Word. Then, and only then, will we see sustainable change in our habits at home.
It's our prayer that the moments we get with each other and with our kids in the home would be filled with meaning—building bonds, learning God's truths, and enjoying *each other*. May we be mindful of the opportunities our at-home-life affords us, and may we steward them well for our good, our childrens' good, and God's glory.
Stay fierce,
Ryan & Selena
