Today was the day DAS UGLY STICK DAY

I'm slowly converting my methanol powered aircraft over to electric.

It was the turn of my trusted old scratch built Das Ugly Stick. It hasn't seen the sky for about 10 years.
While not a light aircraft the 60 size model had nearly unlimited vertical power with a ASP 91 two stroke up front and I was keen to have that sort of thrust out of it still.

Electric power proved it was up to the task.
A 12x 7 propeller is driven by an AT3530 KV 350 motor. Powered by 2 x 14.8 volt 4 cell 5200mah batteries wired to produce an 8s battery running into a Skywalker 130Amp V2 esc.

I'm running a separate battery for the servos.

The Skywalker esc has additional wiring to allow for reverse thrust.
It's going to take a bit to get use to and it's not really advisable to back up with the transmitter in one hand and phone in the other. In fact nose wheel steering wasn't possible.

This was Wayne's first rc model aircraft.
We both learnt on the same aircraft and he went to a Tower Hobbies Minuteman RC Aircraft.

It was a moulded pvc fuselage with a sold foam core wing.

It had to fly as fast as hell to ensure it stayed in the sky. It was a heavy aircraft.
The Tower Hobbies .40 methanol engine use to scream it though the sky.

It was a very robust 4 channel aircraft sold by Tower Hobbies in the mid 90s.

Does anyone else remember this aircraft?

Wayne and Jj are out visiting this weekend. The weather turn on such a great day Wayne and I headed for the runway.
Wayne put together video clip for me, many thanks.
The last landing was done right on the legal hour of darkness.

Go the Cessna 337.

I did manage some lops and rolls. However I tried a knife edge manoeuvre which proved beyond the abilitie of the two small rudders I had installed.

Mind Over Matter.

Mine matters.

I spend all the time teaching Hunter how to fly and he just has no respect, I'm older, I'm his grandfather, so what he says, take this. He descends on my poor old Bixler and knocks me out of the sky.
The fuselage came apart enough to break the centre wing joint, causing half the wing to reject flight and flutter down.
As a bit of good luck would have it momentum bought the bixler down to about a metre off the ground before the forced landing bit occurred.

Who taught Hunter about the victory roll.

On the next combat flight I think I'll put my streamer on.

The 5 minute expoy proved to still be my friend and I'm ready to go again.

Today also saw the start of my granddaughter Kenzi learning to fly today.

I teach using a wireless buddy box system and lesson one is getting use to how the sticks work. She managed some of the corners without me taking over.
I used my electric Boomerang 60 because nothing happens to fast and it's got a great gliding ability.

She was happy flying and did as she was instructed. This included wings level, full throttle and then hard up on the elevator
After the 3rd loop I took control and landed.

What a fantastic day.
Hunter did his maiden flight on his Taipan.
I gave it to him a while ago but we decided it was not a learning to aircraft.
He learnt on several of my training aircraft including boomerang 60 and some low wing trainers.
Not only did he give it a maiden flight I took my Taipan up at the same time and we had a great time flying together.

The end of an era
Today saw the sale of the big blue trailer use as a mobile shop, workshop and aircraft transporter by RC Flight Training for many years

As part of my retirement I purchased a property large enough to support my hobby of flying radio controlled model aircraft. Meaning I no longer had the need for the trailer.

It's great knowing two students I'm presently teaching to fly have purchased the trailer and it will continue to used for what I fitted it out for.
