There’s something special about delivering a space that means more than just furniture.
NULLA Furniture recently completed a fitout for the UniSC First Nations Unit, creating an environment designed to support comfort, creativity, connection and pride.
From the colours selected in the fabrics, to the warmth of the laminate grain and the ergonomic design of the furniture, every element contributes to how people experience the space.
But the bigger impact is what the environment represents.
For First Nations students, staff and community, there is pride in walking into a space where First Nations artwork is visible, culture is respected, and the furniture and fitout have been delivered by a First Nations-owned business.
That visibility matters. It demonstrates what First Nations businesses are capable of delivering while creating spaces where our people can see themselves reflected in the environment around them.
One of the highlights of the project was also having a yarn with Uncle Professor Kevin Williams about his life experiences — growing up as a First Nations man in Australia, the changes he has witnessed throughout his lifetime, and the opportunities now available for our people through education and across Australian society.
There is still plenty of work ahead, but conversations like these remind us how far our people have come — and why creating opportunities for the next generation matters.
And it’s always a good feeling when an Elder walks through the finished space and gives your work the tick of approval.
More than furniture. It’s about creating environments that reflect identity, build pride and demonstrate First Nations capability.
