Today we had 20 Holmesglen TAFE Furniture Design students deconstructing 4 pianos. This group of future creatives will then design and build furniture items from the beautiful timbers, Ivory and ebony keys, ornate brassware and metalware. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!

What can be lurking inside the top lid of a piano? This lovely looking, modern Beale piano was actually harbouring a dark secret on the inside - a wool moth infestation! Beware Tineola bisselliella - aka the Wool Moth! Wool moths LOVE to eat all the accumulated dust, wool and felt parts of pianos that make up the action. Infestation is a reasonably common occurrence in Australia, although usually not quite to this extent. Only buy pianos that have been professionally certified as structurally sound and pest-free!

Piano keyboard locks- they were built into piano fallboard lids from the mid 1800’s. Presumably the piano was such a revered item in households and public halls that it was preferred not to allow just anyone to play them!
They are made from brass and later stainless steel coated with brass or nickel. We have reused them as box locks or for piano restoration replacement parts. Piano locks come in a vast array of sizes so we have over 120 of them!

On this beautiful Melbourne autumn day, we delivered “Briellen” Beale to its new home at Wyndham Central College’s playground. Besides providing endless recess and lunch break entertainment, it allows access to music for all. We always try and let former piano owners know what new future was created for their old piano. Briellen’s former owner said “I’m so very glad to hear that the piano has found a new home and can be enjoyed by students for years to come. Thanks again for your assistance with this - you provide a wonderful service to keep pianos out of landfill!” So much happiness all around 🥰🎹🎵❤️

Copper recycling day today- 128.2 kg of copper wound piano bass strings @ approximately 75% Cu around the steel core. Having spent lots of hours working in Mt Isa’s vast and very deep copper mines looking at, and for, chalcopyrite (copper iron sulfide), it is really satisfying to know that this versatile and highly valued metal can be resmelted and then recycled relatively easily, and endlessly.
