As most piano tuners, restorers and of course recyclers (ie us) will attest, the things you can find in a piano never cease to amaze. During deconstructions, we've had cat litter and mouse nests, full blown mould requiring bleach decontamination, piano feet and legs falling off due to borer, active moth infestations - the list goes on. It has been a while between blog chats, however piano pestilence is an important topic for all current and would-be piano owners to be aware of-enjoy this months read!

They start slowly and silently, in the darkest corners on a piano, well and truly hidden from plain sight. From just one tiny spot, they begin to multiply, using the pianos timber and felts as an energy source to fuel their growth. These are the Hidden Piano Pestilences of Borer, Moth and Mould and....

We have the pleasure of the third visit of Holmesglen TAFE students taking apart 3 pianos. In doing so, they are learning about the wonderful heritage and high quality of these aged timbers, as well as the methods of construction from 100 years ago. All on a perfect spring day.

Mike was a special guest and speaker at The Spirit of Poland Concert & PolMusicA 2026 Awards Ceremony this afternoon, held at The Melbourne Recital Centre. His piano tuning and restoration company, Hendry Pianos, has been restoring this rare Pleyel Grand Piano which was played by the renowned Polish pianist, Pawel Zawadzki, as the feature of this concert.

Player piano mechanism day today- we had over 21 mechanisms to strip down for replacement parts. As Mike says, some parts you just can’t buy anymore. He reuses various bits and pieces in player piano restoration work- so nothing goes to waste! (Except for plastic tubing!)

It’s a great spring day here in Melbourne for our latest student employee, Joseph, to commence holiday work. We think that giving young people practical experience in a small business environment provides some valuable insights and skills to take forward into whatever future endeavours they find themselves in.

At the heart of PolMusicA's The Spirit of Poland concert is a historic Chopin-era Pleyel grand piano which has undergone careful restoration by Hendry Pianos. One of the very few playable historic Pleyels known in Australia, the instrument will return to the concert stage at Melbourne Recital Centre for a rare public performance.

A sentimental gift inherited from her grandmother, this piano created a whole blanket box full of happy family memories for our client over its 116 year playing life. Melbourne Piano Agents, Carnegie & Sons, imported the very popular Gors & Kallmann pianos to Melbourne from Germany from the late 1800's onwards. They usually have stunning burl walnut cases and we have recycled/transformed 23 of them-keeping those beautiful timbers out of landfill and the heritage and memories preserved. Many thanks to Laura of - transforming pianos may well be your life's calling!
