Coastal homes face unique challenges, from wind exposure to changing temperatures.

This Passivhaus responds with a robust envelope, high-performance glazing, and carefully considered openings.

Every window in this Jan Juc project is placed with intention to capture sweeping ocean views and natural light.

Combined with deep eaves and shading, the home maintains a strong connection to the outdoors while staying comfortable and efficient inside.

Create your very own coastal haven with Maxa Design!

A high-performing roof does more than shelter your home. It plays a direct role in how you manage heat, light, and comfort.

Eaves are often built into roof design as the default for solar control. But they're a fixed solution, typically sized for midday summer and winter sun angles. In reality, the hottest part of the day often arrives later in the afternoon, when the sun is lower and eaves offer limited protection.

That’s where the roof needs to work smarter.

By integrating external sun blinds into the overall design, you move beyond static shading. You gain control. Blinds can respond to changing conditions throughout the day, blocking unwanted heat when it matters most while still allowing light and warmth when you want it.

In Passivhaus and high-performance homes, roof design, glazing, and shading need to be considered together. It’s not just about overhang depth or pitch. It’s about how every element works as a system to manage solar gain effectively.

Great homes don't need perfect sites. They need the right approach.

This Passivhaus project turned constraints into opportunities. Mature trees, limited space, and neighbouring homes all shaped the design.

Strategic glazing captures light where it’s needed, while the surrounding greenery creates a natural buffer from neighbouring properties.

The result is a home that feels open, yet completely private.

Let’s design a home that works beautifully with your environment!

What if your new home could be exceptional from day one?

This Northcote project began with a clear vision. Create a home that’s efficient, low maintenance, and filled with natural light.

Through thoughtful design and passive solar principles, the result is a modern home that feels bright, comfortable, and easy to live in.

When you start with the right approach, you set the standard for how your home performs for years to come.

Ever wondered why some homes feel cold no matter how much you heat them?

It often comes down to air leakage. Gaps around windows, junctions between walls and floors, service penetrations, and poorly detailed roof connections all allow warm air to escape and cold air to enter.

In Passivhaus design, these points are carefully detailed and sealed with a continuous airtight layer. Membranes, tapes, and airtightness systems are used to ensure every connection is properly resolved and tested.

This doesn't mean sealing the home shut. It means controlling how air moves.

Uncontrolled drafts are eliminated, while a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery supplies fresh, filtered air throughout the home. It recovers heat from outgoing air, helping maintain internal temperatures with minimal energy use.

The result is a home that stays consistently warm, uses far less energy, and provides cleaner, healthier air for your family.

Design a luxurious, bespoke home that performs beautifully, wherever you are in Australia.

Imagine cooking a meal here while the kids play just outside...

This Forest Hill Passivhaus was designed for real family living. Open, connected spaces flow effortlessly from kitchen to living to garden, creating a home that brings people together.

Behind the scenes, triple glazing and a high-performance envelope keep it warm in winter, cool in summer, and incredibly efficient to run.

Luxury isn't just how it looks. It’s how it lives.

A heritage home reimagined for modern living!

This Kensington renovation transformed a single-fronted Victorian workers’ cottage while respecting its place among the early 1900s homes in the street.

Natural light became a defining feature of the redesign. Clerestory windows and carefully placed glazing bring daylight deep into the home, even into spaces like the bathroom, where a planted courtyard creates a calm connection to the outdoors.

Polished concrete floors run throughout the home, paired with hydronic heating to provide gentle warmth, durability, and low maintenance. The simple white palette and clean lines create a quiet, balanced interior that complements the character of the original timber cottage while introducing a fresh modern layer.
