More progress on the plaster frame restoration.

Once the new castings have been secured using resin to the existing frame, additional plaster is applied ready for shaping then carved to match the old with the new.

Once happy with the result a white primer paint is applied, once dry it is followed by oil base paint (Indian Red) is applied. The reason for using a red color means that the following coats of Gold/Broze will have depth. This method of color sequence is a tried and true process used on plaster or wooden cared frames for centuries.

So much more work to be done.

The next instalment of the picture frame restoration.

First image shows a simple experiment of a mold using plasticene as an experiment as to use up some of the excess plaster, to which didn't work as well as I had hoped. Just one of those thins if you don't try then how will you know what works or not.

Following image is the process of creating a impression of the corner section, had to work quickly to get the plaster into the modeling clay before it hardened so it could be pealed away from the plaster cast.

Following photos is of the casting to which then had to shaved down to size then glued into place with resin then rebuild sections to connect new with old. Many hours of adding new small layers then carve back in with a metal scribe.

Lots more to come, this is not even the half way mark.

The next instalment of the picture frame restoration.
Now that the back miter joins are now stable as shown in previous post the next stage is to clean and scrape off any loose plaster ready for the coming stages.

Using a modeling clay pressed into the frame ready for casting the plaster. Can be a bit hit and miss with some of the molds and castings breaking. Had to repeat process a few times. Also had to build up some of the damaged sections with plaster bit by bit due to the irregular pattern away from the corners. Once set, using a metal scribe and sandpaper reformed the shapes.
Something that could not be rushed so not to cause more damage.

I'm hoping some time soon that there is a vote to put more hours in a day.
The continuation of a recent project for a local customer down here at Goolwa of the plaster relief frame restoration job.

The first 2 images depicts the importance of stabilizing the frame with the addition of corner supports which was glued with resin then screwed into place. The 4mm plywood squares were also stained in (Golden Oak) to match the rest of the frame.

Once the resin was set then the process of restoration of the other side could start.

Lots more stages to come.

With the wormer months coming to an end, it's been hectic trying to get a few projects.

A recent job for a local customer here in Goolwa meant a lot of time was taken up getting it right.

A very damaged plaster frame dating back to possibly the 1930's was in need of some tender love and care. Something I 've not done for at least 10+ year to which would mean going back to re-learn some old techniques. Thankfully these days there are better products available to make the job easier.

A very unique frame to which I've never seen the lie's of before, so this will need some special attention to get it right.

Below is some of the damage prior to restoration and cleaning.
The frame size was around 120x50cm.

The completed project for Ian Jolly delivered the day before Christmas ready for his Grand Son. Talk a very lucky little boy.

This easiel is strong enough to withstand at least 30Kay per hour winds, tested the Sunday before delivery. Created from pine timber with Golden Oak stain with 4 layers of varnish along with an orange oil furniture polish.
Couldn't help but to draw a questioning Santa.

The design has several different functions so that the item can be used as a blackboard or later when the boy grows up it can be used for school art projects.

May it bring many more happy days for the entire family as there is also talk for a bit of fun to use it as a menu board for family gathering.

Update on work in progress for commission for Ian Jolly's young Grandson (Victor Harbor SA) of the Blackboard Easel. As you can see the process of putting together each component then to the following stage of application of stain and varnish. Everything must be done separately before assembly.

Quick update on the follow up of the easel with some more work in progress. Lots of engineering to make sure it will be sturdy enough to withstand a hammering by a young child.

As you will be able to see the uprights have additional weight added at the bottom to create a little more stability.
You won't get this special added feature in that imported flimsy disposable crap. Made to last generations to come.

And now to something where I can make someone happy.
A commission by Ian Jolly of Victor Harbor area wanted an easel for his 3YO Grandson for Christmas.

We decided that the easel would be something he could grow into which would mean he could use it for his blackboard drawing experimentation and later to be used for his school art projects or anyone else who like to dabble in the arts.

lots of thought went into designing and creating the work to ensure it was durable and sturdy enough to withstand a bit of rough treatment.

So this is where it all began, the images below show the progress starting back in October of 25. Here is the first stage which doesn't look like much at the moment, however it shows the process of how the support cross sections will interlock with the uprights. Then the adjustment holes are drilled out using the press. Lots of work but it all needs to happen in sequence as it is too difficult to adjust later.
