Great to be invited to take part in the discussion on reuse of radios and vintage tech. Vintage bluetooth speakers are still one of our favourite products to produce, let there be more reuse in the world!

Wooden wirelesses, 60s transistors and 80s boomboxes are just some of the obsolete gadgets having fresh life breathed back into them by tech tinkerers. Sam Davies spoke to this up-cycling community to find out why upgrading retro speakers is so important.

"If you think about it: 80% of the environmental impact is decided when designers sit around a table and start to conceptualise. What is this thing? What material will we use? What’s the manufacturing process? All the questions that designers start to ask before we put pen to paper."

From an interview with Dr Brandon Gien about the 2025 World Design Congress.

We think there is a substantial issue with these questions. How about asking "How can we reuse resources/goods/components we already have?

Don't choose materials, choose from existing materials or components. Don't make products recyclable, make them using recycling or reuse. Designing with some future aim of circularity is missing the point. We need to be putting circularity in the production of the product this time, not next time.

Over the last 10 or so weeks I have been busy working with 4 wonderful founders of CE businesses to improve the sustainability of our work as part of the GPG Circular Economy Regional Growth Accelerator.

I will share some of my learnings in the coming days and weeks, but for now I would like to thank all who mentored us through the course and all that turned up Tuesday evening in Ballarat to engage with our stories.

A little shakedown test for our Re-Tuned Bluetooth Speakers before they go live Sunday at retuned.au

Recorded on a phone with no special mic or other equipment, in a room with minimal sound dampening, but it gives a feel for what is possible with our kits and your old guitar.

Our Re-Tuned speaker kits mount securely inside the sound hole of acoustic guitars with 3 clamps.

They feature a high quality speaker at the heart of the sound hole offering clear highs, while the guitar's body acts as an acoustic chamber providing rich warm lows and a full sound.

Only a few days to go until these launch!
