Stories we know reimagined through play

There is something deeply meaningful about offering children familiar stories, and then watching them transform those stories into something entirely their own.

Inspired by the well-known tale of Little Red Riding Hood, this crochet cork character set invites children to step beyond listening, and into storytelling.

As children move the characters through space, they begin to explore the story in new ways, retelling, adapting, and sometimes completely rewriting what happens next.

In these moments, so much learning unfolds:
- Language development as children retell and extend the narrative
- Comprehension and sequencing as they explore the structure of the story
- Social understanding as they consider characters, choices, and consequences
- Imaginative play as children create new endings, roles, and possibilities beyond the original tale
- Confidence as children share their ideas and take ownership of the story

Traditional tales like this have been told and retold for generations, evolving across cultures and time, and in the hands of children, they continue to evolve still.

What makes resources like this so powerful is the way they invite children to move from hearing a story, to living it.

I love imagining these characters as part of a story basket, combined with loose parts, or used in small group storytelling where each child contributes their own ideas.

When children engage with the natural world, they are noticing, questioning, and making sense of change over time.

This wooden frog lifecycle set offers a tangible way for children to explore one of nature’s most remarkable transformations. As they handle each stage, from eggs to tadpole to frog, they are invited to slow down, observe, and wonder.

In these moments, so much learning unfolds:
- Scientific thinking as children explore life cycles and change over time
- Sequencing and understanding as they order each stage of development
- Language development as they describe, question, and share ideas
- Imaginative play as children create pond worlds, stories, and journeys for each stage
- A deeper connection to the natural environment and living things

Hands-on lifecycle resources support children to build understanding through experience, moving beyond abstract ideas into something they can see, touch, and explore. Learning about frog development, for example, helps children understand how animals grow and change through distinct stages

What makes this kind of resource so powerful is the way it invites both scientific inquiry and imaginative exploration, side by side.

What questions might this spark in your learning environment?

A little jar of play that goes a long way

If your child loves pretend play, making cups of tea, running a little café, or “baking” just like you, then this biscuit jar set is one of those toys that will get used over and over again.

There’s something about opening a container, taking something out, and serving it up that children just love.

And while it might look like simple play, there’s so much happening behind the scenes:
- Building fine motor skills as little hands open, grasp, and serve
- Developing language through role play (“Would you like a biscuit?”)
- Practising social skills like sharing and turn-taking
- Using their imagination, creating cafés, tea parties, and their own little worlds
- Learning through everyday experiences they see at home

Pretend food like this is loved in early learning and at home because it brings real-life experiences into play, helping children make sense of their world while having fun

And the best part? No crumbs, no mess, just hours of imaginative play.

Perfect for:
✔ Play kitchens and cubby houses
✔ Tea parties with siblings or teddies
✔ Independent play time
✔ A beautiful, handmade gift

Would your little one run a cafe, or host a tea party?

A tiny calming tool you’ll want in every bag…

You know those moments… Waiting at a café. Sitting in the car. Trying to get through a quick appointment.

And your child just needs something to do with their hands.

This little jellyfish fidget is one of those simple things that can make those moments so much easier.

Inside, there’s a small marble that children can gently push and roll back and forth, and it’s surprisingly calming.

While they’re playing, they’re also:
- Keeping busy hands occupied in a calm, focused way
- Supporting concentration during quiet moments
- Exploring soothing, repetitive movement
- Using their imagination, turning it into a tiny sea creature or part of their play world
- Finding a sense of calm during transitions or big feelings

Fidgets like this are often used because the repetitive motion can help children stay focused and manage restlessness in a gentle way

And the best part?
It’s small enough to pop in your bag, keep in the car, or have ready whenever you need it.

Perfect for:
✔ Out and about
✔ Quiet time at home
✔ Waiting moments (that feel very long 😅)
✔ Little hands that always need to stay busy

An invitation to create a world of their own.

There is something quietly powerful about offering children a space where their ideas can take shape, a place where stories begin, evolve, and are retold in countless ways.

This bunny felt play mat becomes that space. A soft, open-ended landscape that invites children to step into play with intention, curiosity, and imagination.

With no fixed outcome, the mat becomes whatever the child needs it to be, a home, a journey, a gathering place, or the beginning of a new story.

In these moments, so much learning unfolds:
- Language development as children narrate and share their stories
- Spatial awareness as they move characters and objects across the mat
- Social learning through shared play, collaboration, and negotiation
- Imaginative play as children create evolving worlds, characters, and storylines

Felt play mats are often used as a backdrop for small world play, offering a defined yet flexible space where children can explore storytelling and creativity in their own way. It’s this balance of structure and openness that makes them such a meaningful addition to early learning environments.

Messy play without the overwhelm.

If you’ve ever wanted to try sensory play at home but worried about the mess (or the setup 😅), this whale sensory play tray is such a simple place to start.

It creates a contained little world where your child can pour, scoop, mix, and explore, without everything ending up all over the house.

While they’re busy playing, so much is happening…

- Building fine motor skills through scooping and pouring
- Developing focus and concentration
- Exploring textures and sensory experiences
- Using their imagination, creating ocean worlds, and little play stories
- Finding calm through repetitive, hands-on play

Sensory trays are loved by parents because they offer open-ended play in a contained space, making it easier to set up and pack away while still supporting creativity and development.

It’s one of those activities that can turn a long afternoon into calm, engaged play.

Perfect for:
✔ Rainy days at home
✔ Quiet play time
✔ Screen-free entertainment
✔ Little learners who love hands-on play

Small figures, big stories.

There is something so powerful about simple, open-ended figures that invite children to create their own meaning through play.

This winter-inspired wooden peg duo offers just that, a gentle invitation into storytelling, connection, and imagination. With minimal features, these figures leave space for children to decide. Who are they? Where are they going? What might happen next?

In these moments, so much learning unfolds:
- Language development as children narrate and share their stories
- Social understanding as characters interact, problem-solve, and build relationships
- Emotional exploration as children project feelings and experiences onto the figures
- Imaginative play as children create winter worlds, adventures, and evolving narratives
- Fine motor development as small hands grasp and move the figures with intention

Simple wooden figures like these are often valued in early learning for their ability to support storytelling, creativity, and open-ended exploration, allowing children to lead the direction of play

I love imagining these as part of a seasonal small world setup, perhaps alongside loose parts, natural materials, or a winter-themed storytelling invitation.

Simple materials, endless possibilities…

There is something so powerful about offering children open-ended resources that invite them to think, create, and explore in their own way.

These wooden acorns are a beautiful example of loose parts play, simple in design, yet rich in possibility. In the hands of a child, they can become anything… treasures, food, counting tools, or part of an imagined world.

In these moments, so much learning unfolds:
- Fine motor development as children grasp, move, and manipulate each piece
- Early numeracy through counting, sorting, and pattern-making
- Problem-solving as children organise and transform materials
- Imaginative play as acorns become ingredients, currency, or elements within small world stories
- A connection to nature as children explore seasonal and environmental themes

Loose parts like these are known for their versatility, they can be used for sorting, counting, and imaginative play, supporting both cognitive and creative development.

What makes them so special is that they don’t tell the child what to do, instead, they invite the child to decide.

I love imagining these as part of a seasonal table, a forest small world, or combined with other natural materials to create rich, evolving play experiences.

A beautiful little toy that keeps hands busy (and learning happening)

If your little one loves stacking, pulling things apart, and trying again (and again 😄), this whale stacking ring is one of those toys they’ll keep coming back to.

It’s soft, gentle, and just the right mix of simple and engaging, perfect for curious little hands.

While your child is playing, they’re also:
- Building fine motor skills (important for things like drawing later on)
- Developing coordination as they stack and balance each ring
- Learning through trial and error, what fits, what doesn’t
- Using their imagination, turning the whale into part of ocean adventures and playtime stories
- Growing confidence as they figure it out for themselves

And because it’s soft crochet, it’s perfect for younger children who are still exploring everything through touch.

It’s one of those toys that grows with them, starting as simple stacking, and later becoming part of imaginative play.

Perfect for:
✔ Quiet play time
✔ Independent play
✔ Early learning at home
✔ A thoughtful, handmade gift

Would your little one stack it, or turn it into an ocean adventure?

One of those toys that keeps little hands busy (and calm)

If your child loves touching, exploring, and fidgeting, these sensory tiles are one of those resources that just work.

Each tile invites little hands to press, trace, and explore different textures, and it’s amazing how long children will stay engaged when something feels just right.

What looks like simple play is actually doing so much behind the scenes.

As your child explores, they are:
- Building fine motor strength and coordination
- Developing focus and concentration
- Exploring different textures and sensory input
- Using their imagination, turning tiles into roads, patterns, or part of their own play worlds
- Finding calm through repetitive, soothing movement

Sensory tiles are often used in early learning and therapy settings because textured surfaces can support motor skills, balance, and sensory development through hands-on exploration.

And the best part?
They’re open-ended, your child might stack them, line them up, build with them, or simply enjoy how they feel.

Perfect for:
✔ Quiet play time
✔ After-school wind-down
✔ Supporting sensory needs
✔ Keeping little hands busy without screens

How would your child explore these?
