Illawarra Coatings

Illawarra Coatings Manufacturers of advanced coating systems. Over the following years, the range was expanded to include solventfree epoxies, densifiers, primers and sealers.

Illawarra Coatings was established in 1997 to manufacture and supply waterborne epoxy coating systems to the construction industry. By 2005, we had outgrown our first factory in Woonona just north of Wollongong. The search then began for land to build a custom facility. In 2007 we purchased land at Appin, south of Campbelltown and began the process of designing the new factory. Construction commen

ced in late 2007 with the facility opening for business in late 2008...just in time for the GFC. At Illawarra Coatings we have continued to expand our product range by expending considerable research and development in Field Applied UV Cured coatings for concrete, timber and Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT). Recently, a range of waterborne, solventborne and solventfree polyurethanes for concrete and timber have been added to the range. The business was started by, and is still 100% owned by the Owen family.

Tired of having left over epoxy flooring products from all those jobs.

Illawarra Coatings has changed the way in which applicators can operate by developing the "Common Resin System" approach. Now you just have to buy a single resin product that you can use across all of your jobs, and marry that up with the right hardener for the job.

The hardener systems have also been developed to allow for their blending on site to achieve the exact result you need. Imagine your doing a coving application and the temperature is a bit low...just blend some Rapid Hardener in any ratio you like with the standard TF hardener and you can control the set time. Same idea with a flooring job. Instead of just using the SF40 hardener, why not add so Rapid to give you a walk on time of about 3 hours for those rapid return to service jobs.

Interested...check out the range at www.illawarracoatings.com.

You may have heard of the recent advances in UV LED cure technology for Automotive Refinish...well what you may not know is that Illawarra Coatings has now released the latest addition to our UV Cure range...EcoLux R.

The EcoLux R product range has been developed here in Australia over the past 2 years specifically for the Automotive Refinish market and works with the latest generation of LED lamp systems...no more tacky surfaces after cure that require solvent wipes.

The range currently includes a Scratch and Chip Filler, Spray Primer and Clearcoat and is made right here at our factory in Appin, southwest of Sydney.

Contact us if you are interested in finding out more about this exciting new industry development.

Over the last few years we have been asked on many occasions whether we supply the epoxy resins for artistic applications. The short answer at the moment is no and I will tell you why.

Epoxy resins yellow...end of story.

I don't care that there are some companies based in the USA who claim that they have developed an epoxy resin that is non yellowing and have done accelerated UV testing of their product through Atlas Labs in Arizona along with a number of their competitors products. I too have tested all these products with our accelerated UV testing equipment and unfortunately they all yellow to differing levels and over differing time periods.

Adding UV absorbers and HALS to epoxy resins, as has been suggested in many online posts and marketing blurbs does have the effect of dramatically reducing the yellowing of the epoxy...only until the UV absorbers and HALS have been exhausted.

UV absorbers and HALS work like sunscreen...they block the UV rays for a period of time but are consumed in the process. Once they are consumed the UV radiation is free to do what it loves to do, burn your skin, or yellow your epoxy art work.

Stay tuned while I continue my rant on this subject...

We are often asked about Safety Colours...did you know that there is an Australian Standard that defines the actual AS2700 colour as well as where each colour should be used. Want some more information, check out the Knowledge Base Article on our website on the subject.
