Pallet statistics are a bit hard to come by for Australia but the U.S. Forest Service has published statistics for the United States and you can assume that while the quantities are significantly lower the proportions are roughly the same. America has an estimated 1.9 billion pallets and to put that into perspective, think of it like this - 1.9 billion seconds is equal to a little over 60 years. A

merica produces 500 million new pallets each year and those 500 million pallets account for nearly 40% of all hardwood production in the US - the pallet industry is the second only to the construction industry as the biggest consumer of American hardwood. So, of those 1.9 billion pallets, 1.4 billion are being used to move stuff around, 175 million are repaired or recycled and 325 million are either incinerated, abandoned or sent to landfill - remember these are just the figures for the US, no-one seems to know how many there are worldwide but it all adds up to a staggering waste of natural resources even if the timber is, by and large, renewable. Pallet wood is almost always fugly until it's cut and sanded and turned into something else.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.
My client wanted a work space for his Weber Q, incorporating a dedicated space for a drinks fridge (left) and a lockable cupboard for the gas bottle.
The gas hose comes up through the grey fl**ge on the top and the chevron pattern matches the planter boxes I made for them a few months ago - all in beautiful, golden balau.

Wandering around a garden centre, I noticed how folksy and cheaply made their bee hotels look so I made some modern modern ones for modern houses. These are cut carved and charred (shou sugi ban) by hand, then framed in stunning hardwood.

These Fugly Wood Firewood Caddies take all of the hassle out of fetching firewood and give you a place to store it safely and neatly inside. Each one is fitted with rubber wheeled castors (so they don't scuff up or scratch your floor) and I can make them in just about any size you need..

I've heard a lot of people talking about starting a vegetable garden lately - for some it's about being just that little bit more self reliant and for others it's about giving their kids something to do and maybe even teach some elements of STEM subjects at home (gardening might seem simple but it involves counting, measuring, observation, data collection and analysis, experimentation and problem solving.) So if anyone needs advice on how to make something like the raised beds in the photos or, if you don't have the tools or knowhow, I can make them for you and have them ready to collect for the cost of the materials (hardwood sleepers, screws and braces etc..) and a nominal charge for labour.

*Edit*

Hardwood sleepers measuring 200 x 50 x 2.4 metres are $31 which works out to about $13 per metre.

Fugly Wood

Fugly Wood began with a few small planter boxes for a friend.

Those first ones were made from reclaimed pallet wood and pallet wood is almost always fugly until it's cut and sanded and turned into something else.

I still make new and improved versions of them but these days, I prefer to work with sustainably grown hardwoods for their durability, strength and low maintenance…but the name stuck.

Over the last few years there have been big changes in the way cafes and small shops are designed and the need for makers who can create unique pieces with the right look and feel but without the commercial shopfitter’s price tag. The Fugly Wood product range has expanded accordingly.
