The scholarship was only the beginning.

For 2008 Hawker Scholar Sue-Lin Wong, receiving the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship was one step in a journey that would eventually lead to an international career in journalism.

After studying Asian Studies and Law at the Australian National University, Sue-Lin went on to work for Reuters, the Financial Times and The Economist, reporting on major political, economic and social developments across Asia and around the world.

While her professional achievements are significant, Sue-Lin reflects most fondly on the opportunities, friendships and experiences that emerged during her time as a Hawker Scholar.

Her journey highlights something that remains true for many Hawker alumni: the scholarship is not an endpoint, but the beginning of a lifetime of learning, growth and contribution.

“Your application begins long before you start writing it.”

Throughout May, we’ve shared reflections and insights designed to encourage students to think more broadly about leadership, contribution, character and growth.

As students move into an increasingly busy period of the academic year, now is an ideal time to begin reflecting on the experiences, challenges, interests and communities that have shaped them.

The strongest applications are often grounded in genuine reflection and self-awareness — not simply achievement alone.

We encourage students, families and educators to continue following along as we share further guidance and insights in the lead-up to scholarship applications opening later this year.

“The scholarship was never intended to reward academic achievement alone.”

When Lilias Needham established the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship to honour her brother Charles Hawker’s legacy, she hoped future scholars would become well-rounded individuals with leadership potential, wide-ranging interests and a desire to contribute positively to society.

That philosophy continues to guide the scholarship today.

Leadership is not limited to titles or awards. It can be found in students who support their communities, balance responsibility with their studies, encourage others, volunteer their time, or quietly make a difference in their surroundings.

The Hawker Scholarship continues to recognise young Australians who demonstrate character, commitment, leadership and service alongside academic ability.

If you’re considering applying in the future, understanding the values behind the scholarship is a good place to start.

For many students, there’s pressure to have everything figured out early — the perfect degree, the perfect career path, the perfect story.

But growth is rarely linear.

For 2007 Hawker Scholar Ashoor Khan, the years since university have included law, community development, regional and remote Australia, teaching, further study, and periods of uncertainty and change along the way.

Reflecting on that journey, Ashoor shares that many of his greatest lessons came through challenge, adaptability and reconnecting with purpose.

As part of our Student Guidance Series, we want students to know there is no single pathway to leadership, contribution or impact.

Sometimes the most important thing is simply remaining open to growth, community and new opportunities.

Follow along throughout May as we continue sharing reflections and guidance for future applicants.

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship was established to perpetuate the memory and example of Charles Hawker — scholar, soldier, pastoralist and statesman.

Its purpose has always extended beyond academic success. The scholarship was created to encourage young Australians to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to society more broadly.

As we begin our Student Guidance series this month, we encourage students to reflect on the experiences, values and acts of service that have shaped them.

Not just a scholarship. A starting point.

For Hawker Scholars, this is where something bigger begins — not only financial support, but a community, opportunities, and experiences that shape what comes next.

As we move into the next stage of the year, we’ll be sharing more about what it takes to apply and how to prepare.

If you’re considering your future pathways, now is the time to start exploring.

Am I eligible for the Hawker Scholarship?

It’s a question we hear often — and one that’s worth asking.

The Scholarship is open to students who demonstrate academic ability, leadership potential, and strength of character.

There’s no single pathway, and no expectation that everything is already planned out.

If you’re thinking about your future and how you might contribute more broadly, it may be worth learning more about what the Hawker Scholarship offers.

Sometimes, the first step is simply asking the question.

Education is shaped not only by what you study, but by the environment you’re part of.

Residential colleges provide more than a place to live. They offer a sense of community, support, and an environment that encourages both academic and personal growth.

It’s where students develop independence, build confidence, and gain new perspectives through shared experiences.

For many Hawker Scholars, this becomes an important part of their university journey.

Sometimes growth begins by taking a chance.

After finishing school, Hugh Dawson chose a different path — applying to work on a 2.6-million-acre beef breeding operation at Beetaloo Station in the Northern Territory, eight hundred kilometres south of Darwin.

The experience provided more than just work. It offered challenge, perspective, and the opportunity to grow in a completely new environment.

It’s a reminder that there is no single pathway. Growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and embracing new experiences.

This is one of many ways Hawker Scholars begin to shape their journey.

Sometimes, the first step is simply being open to where your path might lead.
