Today we celebrate a very special milestone: Franz Rieder’s 25th anniversary with MK Illumination.

For 25 years, Franz is bringing creativity, dedication and a remarkable eye for detail to our Visual Art Studio. More than that, he has been a trusted colleague whose experience and passion have shaped so much of what we do.

Dear Franz, thank you for 25 years of ideas, commitment and shared moments. We are truly grateful to have you with us.

A theme park, a city square and a light festival may look very different.

But after dark, they face the same challenge: how do you encourage people to keep exploring?

The best experiences use rhythm, discovery, shared viewpoints and a clear journey from arrival to finale.

Great seasonal illumination is not just something visitors see. It is something they move through together.

What could one sector learn from another?

Summer has arrived in the city centre of Wels.

Butterflies and flowers made from organic, bio-based material now bring colour and lightness to the streets. The aim is not only to create a beautiful setting, but to shape a welcoming atmosphere where people enjoy spending time.

Because a city centre is more than a shopping destination. It is a place to meet, pause, connect, and feel part of the city.

Myth vs Reality: Episode 3

MYTH: Visitors only come for the photos.

REALITY: The photo is often just the proof that a meaningful moment happened.

Great light festivals give people space to explore, react and connect. A beautiful installation may attract the camera, but the shared experience is what makes visitors stay, talk and remember.

Design for the whole journey, not only the perfect shot.

People do not return to a light festival only for the lights.

They return for the ritual, the surprise and the memories they share with others.

The strongest festivals feel familiar enough to become a tradition, but new enough to justify another visit.

That balance can turn seasonal illumination into a repeatable destination experience that supports visitor engagement, footfall and long-term recognition.

What keeps people coming back to your destination?

MYTH vs REALITY. Episode 2

MYTH
The biggest installation always creates the strongest memory.

REALITY
Visitors remember the moment they shared.

A large light installation can impress.
But a smaller scene can stay with people longer if it creates emotion, interaction or a photo-worthy moment.

In light parks and light festivals, the strongest memory is often not the biggest object.

It is the experience around it.

What do you remember most: the lights or the moment?

A light festival becomes more powerful when people experience it together.

Visitors walk, stop, react, take photos and share the route as a group. That shared behaviour is what turns seasonal illumination into a stronger destination experience.

For cities, retail destinations and attractions, the opportunity is not only visual impact. It is creating an after-dark experience that brings people together and gives them a reason to stay longer.

MYTH vs REALITY: Episode 1

MYTH
A light festival is mainly about beautiful installations.

REALITY
The strongest light festivals create shared moments people want to experience together.

Beautiful lighting matters.
But the real value often comes from what happens around it.

People stop.
They take photos.
They meet friends.
They move through the space together.
They share the same “wow” moment at the same time.

That is what turns a light festival from a visual display into a visitor experience.
For cities, destinations and organisers, the question is not only:
“How impressive does it look?”
It is also: “What moment will people share, remember and talk about afterwards?”

Design the journey, not just the installation.

Theme parks are increasingly being judged by what happens after sunset.

For many visitors, the most memorable part of a day at an attraction is not always the biggest ride or the longest queue. It is the moment the park changes pace: when lighting, sound, movement and shared anticipation turn familiar spaces into a different kind of visitor experience.

This is why after-dark experiences have become a strategic part of theme park programming. They extend dwell time, support evening footfall and give guests a reason to stay longer, return later and share more.

Seasonal illumination and light festival formats can play an important role here. Used well, they do more than decorate a park. They create visual routes, emotional peaks and new reasons to explore areas visitors may have passed through earlier in the day.

Projects across the attractions sector show how light can help turn evening hours into a destination experience.

How are leisure destinations making better use of the night-time visitor journey?
