The season may have slowed down, but we certainly have not.

Our cul-de-sac is now fully booked as we embark on a summer of extensive refits, repairs, and major projects here at Antigua Slipway.

For generations, this area has been known as the “Hurricane Hole” of the Caribbean — a reputation earned since the 1700s. Sheltered, secure, and purpose-built for serious marine works, it remains one of the safest and most protected dockage workspaces anywhere in the Eastern Caribbean.

From classic yachts to modern superyachts, summer at the Slipway is all about craftsmanship, hard work, and keeping vessels ready for the seasons ahead.

From a classic wooden ketch on our railway in the 1970s… to a barge in 2024 — different vessels, same spirit. Generations of hands, skill, and determination have kept this place moving, day in and day out.

This Labour Day, we recognize the people behind it all — the welders, divers, operators, administrators, and every member of the team who shows up and gets the job done. The ones who built it, and the ones carrying it forward.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight. It’s earned.

The largest two-masted schooner in the world made a powerful impression at our fuel dock today.

At 64m / 210ft, ATHOS is where classic sailing soul meets world-class engineering — a global voyager, designed by André Hoek, built by Holland Jachtbouw, and refitted by Royal Huisman.

From her carbon rigging and push-button sail handling to her crow’s nest elevator and unmistakable profile, ATHOS is not just a yacht — she is a statement.

Humans of Slipway - Episode 15

Meet Shaloy.

Shaloy joined Antigua Slipway in 2022 and has steadily grown into his role as Assistant Yard Manager, becoming a quiet force at the heart of our operations. Born and raised in English Harbour, his connection to the yard and the sea runs deep, and it shows in everything he does.

He is a cornerstone of our trailer and railway operations, guiding each haul out with precision, care, and an instinct that only comes from true hands on experience. From routine maintenance to complex lifts, and even diving beneath the surface when needed, Shaloy ensures that every vessel is handled safely and with confidence.

There is a natural rhythm to the way he works. Always focused, always present, often with a tool in hand, he carries a mechanical intuition that keeps the yard moving forward. Over time, he has taken on greater responsibility with quiet determination, earning the respect of both colleagues and clients alike.

A proud owner of a classic Toyota Hilux, Shaloy embodies the spirit of someone who builds, fixes, and improves with purpose. Dependable, grounded, and deeply committed, he is as much a part of the Slipway as the railway itself.

In the video, he can be seen maneuvering Argo, the Mini Globe Race vessel, a moment that reflects the calm control and capability he brings to every operation.

Shaloy is not just a leader in the yard, but a trusted presence, someone who carries the weight of responsibility with humility and strength.

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Branson Belle, Executive Director of the Centre for Excellence for Oceanography and the Blue Economy (CoBE) at The UWI Five Islands Campus, along with his team, to Antigua Slipway.

The meeting focused on Marine Spatial Planning within Nelson’s Dockyard National Park (NDNP), where Antigua Slipway operates. Discussions explored key priorities for the management of land, coastal, and marine ecosystems, as well as the development of an effective governance framework.

Important topics included pollution and waste management, the designation of marine zones, and the identification of areas for conservation, fishing, and other marine uses. These initiatives are essential to ensuring a balanced and sustainable future for the Park and its stakeholders.

As a business located within NDNP—and the only shipyard in English Harbour—we truly appreciate being included in these discussions. We are proud to support this initiative and look forward to contributing to the successful implementation of the Marine Spatial Plan.

Humans of Slipway - Episode 14

Meet Carmen.

Carmen is our Facilities Attendant, responsible for the cleaning and sanitation of our restrooms, staff quarters, chandlery, and office spaces. Her role is essential in maintaining the standard and presentation of the yard, ensuring both staff and clients experience a clean and comfortable environment.

With a strong attention to detail and an attentive nature, Carmen approaches her work with care and consistency. This is her first season with us, and she has been working hard from day one.

A proud mother of four, three daughters and one son, Carmen brings warmth and positive energy to the team. She enjoys Christian music and can often be found listening to her favorite songs while keeping the yard in order, adding a touch of rhythm to her day.

Always open for a conversation and full of Latin spirit, Carmen carries herself with kindness and a smile. If something is not quite right, she is always ready to step in and make it better.
