Major order from Middle East
In 1981, BAUER received a major order from the Middle East that would serve as the launch pad for development of the company’s highest-performance large-scale air-cooled compressor block. The order comprised a total of 15 high-pressure compressor systems and 164 mobile high-pressure storage units installed on triple-axle Mercedes vehicles. The vehicles were planned as airport servicing units, used for starting turbines and filling tyres. Production had to be completed in an extremely narrow nine-month window – and at the time of order confirmation, BAUER still had no suitable compressor block in its product portfolio. In addition to the customer’s ambitious free air delivery specifications, the new block would be required to withstand the very harshest environmental conditions, with temperatures of over +50° C and sandstorms presenting enormous challenges for the materials used. The new compressor, given the model number K 25, was developed at record speed within the nine-month timeframe. The subsequent assembly of the large-scale systems taxed BAUER’s production capacity almost to the limit. However, in the end the systems were shipped to their destination punctually and met the agreed delivery deadline. The K 25 went on to acquire a legendary reputation for its outstanding ruggedness and reliability. It is still in use today – virtually unchanged.
