We thought we would try letting the Zombie Coop ( named after Lugosi, our head zombie roo) carve their own pumpkin. The other chicken tenders have posted their videos and it just turned out adorable!! Welp.... leave it to our heathens to launch a full on attack. Now when I go into the coop I have to yell "NOT A PUMPKIN!" As toes are now fair game. It won't let me post pics and video at the same time so their masterpiece photos are in comments. I would live to see your flocks results!

Nothing warms my heart like watching our established roo Lonnie teach the new hens where they are supposed to lay. Lonnie was recently moved to a coop with a flock of new layers. He is taking his promotion to Alpha Roo very seriously and is happy to no longer co-manage a flock with his brother. He is vigilant in making sure his girls are in bed by dusk, out of bed at day light, and is quick to settle any attempted pecking order disputes. Lonnie is so protective he has declined attempts to clean the coop and request several days scheduled notice as not to disturb his gals.

Edited to update:
We have found all 6 homes and are now down to a comfortable 4. Lol
We are overrun by roosters at the moment. There are definitely 5 possibly 6 that must find their new coop. We have
2 BYM- absolutely sweet boys and bonded so no fights.
2 blue egger- solid white and gorgeous.
1 Olive egger- maran and possible legbar mix
1 Olive egger- Im on the fence with this boy. If they 2 BYM go to a new home I may move him over to that coop....

Our Loofahs are outta control. Not only did they outgrow their trellis...they took over their moon flower neighbors trellis. When that wasn't enough they claimed the catnip, sage, mint and finally the yard....

We are fortunate to be surrounded by mother nature. During the day we can watch the deer and numerous bird species. However, the night shift is our favorite. Bats take over the skies, fox and coyote yell in the woods, and our back deck becomes a major rest stop. Throughout the night dozens of raccoons and several possum stop in. I absolutely love when the mamas start to bring their littles out to teach them. This mama has very distinctive markings and her litter of 4 is very well mannered and absolutely adorable.

This weekends big score left me and my dear neighbor friend scratching our heads. I had no clue what it was...only that I wanted it cuz it looked pretty darn cool. I brought it home, cleaned it up, put it back together and went on research mode. Turns out it was a once in a lifetime find for me.
I present my new vintage water bottle dispenser complete with stand.
Before things got way techy you would put a 5 gallon glass water bottle in the holder and tip it. Pretty snazzy I think and in amazing condition.

Well....chicken math dun mathed and we have 11 Roos. Unfortunately 4 must find a new coop. All are under a year and just now learning to crow. None are showing any alpha traights and are currently in multi roo groups with dominant roos.
Goose- BYM (Leghorn/Rustic)
Deuce- BYM (Austra White/Rustic)
Waylon- Olive egger
Merle- Blue egger
Pickup only, located in Ruther Glen. Bring appropriate transportation devices.

I am currently locked in several battles of will right now. The Trio and the size appropriate feeder/waterers, June bugs and all our beans, peppers, basil and sage and the battle of Harold.
Harold is a black snake that has repeatedly been evicted from the Skittles Coop for theft of eggs. He's on strike 50 right now I think. We live on a 20 acre plot and each time he's busted he gets placed further back. (It is legal and humane to relocate...not translocate species. Relocate =same forage/habitat area. I.E, front yard to backyard. Translocate = removal to a separate/different forage/habitat. I.E, your property to a park 5 miles away.)
While he is an irritation, we would never use lethal methods on any animal for simply doing what they are programed to do. Maybe if he'd leave the eggs be for a bit he could work on the rodents.
Harold and his egg were relocated further into the woods.

Deuce, Goose and Moose episode 2....
The hardest part of being a parent is being firm and setting boundaries. This is an important foundation is a young ones life. I will absolutely own the fact that I have lapsed in that often. Did my boys use their paci's longer than they should....probably. Did we have way more than the recommended dose of chicken nuggets in their childhood...definitely.
Now on to today's chicken drama.
If you remember, the trio of "I do what I want" has bucked any normal behavior required of chickeness. Roosting..nope. Going to coop at night...nope. Size appropriate feeders/waterers...nope. Self preservation when the other roos alert to potential danger...nope.
As the good parent I am filling their 4 chick sized waterers multiple times daily as appropriate size 1 gallon waterers are still not to be trusted and its too hot to be thirsty. We compromised on the feeder by pulling the bin off and just filling the bottom tray. Trio quickly decided that feed must be emptied onto ground. Well, APPARENTLY once feed hits the dirt it is no longer fit for consumption. So I put the 1 gallon feeder out and told them I was done being bullied. Their response is to spend their day clucking at high volume as if Sarah Machlochlan herself was in the neighborhood. I'm about to break. I know me...I know my fear of them not eating will have their pan back by end of business and they will never learn how to eat from a feeder.
Send prayers....I'm losing the battle of wills.
