Let’s GO!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m going to be there and ready to say hello to every single person that comes to support us with your smiling faces. It doesn’t matter if you buy from our farm, we are genuinely so excited to see the support our community gives to all the vendors. Local. Small businesses. Know where your food comes from. Community!

Can’t wait to see you all and my fellow vendors.
PS. Last week the muffins at Black Dog Farm were to die for! I tried so hard all day to not eat the tasty stuff. By the end of the event I was never so glad to take on a few extra calories.

They make an excellent point. THIS is why feed is a cornerstone to our foundation. Our lines are another cornerstone, and those we we’ve learned from are another and lastly our community for the final corner.

Know your breed and what to feed them!
(This one was a kune kune cross, the customer was not sure what it was crossed with).

Just because you raised a big fat pig, does not mean you will have a large return on your meat.

There are certain breeds that are bred specifically for their lard. This is a pork chop from one of those pigs.

***edited to add, if raised and fed correctly most will not look like this. This is an extreme and can happen in butcher hog breeds as well. This post was intended to stimulate educational conversations among farmers, nothing further.

Alright crew we’re getting ready for our market tomorrow Rich Earth Farm and woo wee are we excited! The last several markets we’ve been asked a good amount of times about our baked goods. As many of you may know, if not you will now, we use our high quality free range, better than organic eggs, our home grown herbs and produce, and the one and only culinary delight, Meishan lard for all our baked goods. There’s usually only 4 ingredients that don’t come from the farm when baking and we make sure those are high quality as well. Fresh milled flour upon request only.
So, this weekend we will not only have our amazing meat grown with feed we can guarantee is better than organic, but we also will bring a small selection of our ready to consume baked goodness! Stay tuned and we’ll see you and your smiling faces in this beautiful weather TOMORROW 3-7!

I’m EARLY! Set up and ready to go. I forgot my tablecloths, but that’s ok! We’re rolling on without it. I had just washed them so they would be wonderfully fresh & clean. I folded them up and put them right by my purse and walked out without them. 🤷🏻‍♀️
It’s a Pig Wing Farm kind of day! Out here beating the heat in the shade and offering up the best of the best…Meishan pork of course.
As always, 10% off to veterans & first responders!

This area will soon be the farrowing area and this crew will be moved to bigger pastures/forests. Since this crew is free feeding we don’t have them with the bigger grow outs because 1-they will take a lot of their food. 2-the bigger crew isn’t on free feed. Although I do have a couple of barrows who by their choice has decided they want to stay with their uncle Earl we try to keep the little in their own area. They will devour this area in no time so they will be moved next door when the grass is gone here. Still building. Still growing. Still learning. Still teaching. Still doing what we love!

I was about to show something to do with our waterers and then the big oops happened and I figured I would show you why ADD/ADHD is problematic in farming…no water hoses or spigots were broken in this accidental refill. Mr. Pig Wing, don’t worry, you don’t have anything new to fix today. :)

Alright, we’re attempting to give this week our best shot at getting the to-do list accomplished! We’ve got a breeding pair going out in Virginia. It’s the last of our breeding pairs that was reserved a couple months ago. We’re excited to get this set with some of our wonderful registered Meishan pig lines.

We are big on only breeding what we can take on, what our family can feed out and provide infrastructure for and what our community demands. We usually are not that farm that will have mature stock available or breeders late in the season. With that being said we’ve already started pairing some of our amazing Meishan pigs for the next season. We’ve currently got Pig Wing Marie Antionette paired with Meishan Preservation Goose and we’re expecting good things with this litter. Marie is nicknamed sleepy on the farm. She’s our most mellow pig to date. Good size, long floppy ears, and good wrinkles, with moderate socks. With Goose we’ve got some fantastic bone structure, great rump & shoulders, wrinkles galore with fantastic socks and a personality that would easily have people fooled that he’s a Labrador. We’re excited to see Marie’s litter in a few months and we will start pairing up a couple more amazing mommas on the farm.

Stay tuned for the farm adventures!

Well, this started as a very productive day. We’re now at 3.5 hours of sitting at a rest stop with animals in the trailer with 2 kiddos because traffic has been standstill for HOURS. What does that mean? Someone was likely injured or worse. So, as I am hot & moody & complaining about my wasted hours here worrying about my animals in the trailer in the heat (not that hot, in the high 70’s, but not cool in a trailer), I was quickly reminded by my mom and my husband, someone else has it worse. They aren’t wrong. Someone else’s day has gone terrible and I’m now grateful that sitting in the AC at a rest stop feeding my kids vending machine junk is the worst of my day. Praying for all involved in today’s wreck.
