WSD Update | Garden Grove Hazardous Materials Incident — May 23, 2026

We want to share an update and express our heartfelt concern for every family and staff member impacted by yesterday's evacuation. We hope you and your loved ones are safe.

On Friday mid-morning, we were notified by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) that four of our schools (Eastwood, Fryberger, Meairs, and Sequoia) were placed under mandatory evacuation. We immediately took action to ensure student safety and, out of an abundance of caution, proactively evacuated four additional schools (Anderson, Finley, Johnson, and Schmitt). All students were safely evacuated and reunited with their families.

Throughout the incident, we have been in continuous contact with the Orange County Fire Authority, Orange County Healthcare Agency, South Coast Air Quality Management District, local law enforcement, and city officials, and participated in an Orange County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) meeting alongside all cooperating partners to assess the situation and coordinate our response. This remains a dynamic and evolving situation, and we will stay closely connected with cooperating agencies as conditions develop.

We will gather further information at the daily OCFA Incident Command Center meetings and will communicate updates as soon as they become available. Meanwhile, we encourage all families and staff to stay informed through the following resources:

1. OCFA: https://bit.ly/2Jf0fHL
2. City of Garden Grove Emergency Updates: https://bit.ly/4v6pWMr
3. Emergency Hotline: (714) 628-7085 24-Hour Call Center: (714) 741-5444

Given the rapidly evolving nature of this situation, we encourage parents in the evacuation zone to be prepared to transition to online learning as early as Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

Read the full details on ParentSquare and please ensure your ParentSquare notifications are turned on for real-time updates.

The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families remains our highest priority. We will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
