What Is A Really Really Free Market?
The Really Really Free Market (RRFM) is a movement based on an alternative gift economy. It aims to counteract capitalism by providing an opportunity to freely share resources, recycle useful items, build community, and ultimately improve the collective lives of all.
Because it truly takes a village to make sure everyone has what they need.
Everyone has something they can give, and everyone has something they are looking for that they want or need. The more we practice acts of solidarity, the greater the benefit for each other and the broader community. The Really Really Free Market is a place for practicing such acts and strengthening the bond between neighbors.
So, on the first Saturday of every month between 11 AM and 2 PM at Bug House Park here in Washington, NC (on the corner of 2nd and Charlotte Street) everyone is welcome to arrive with goods, services, skills, performances, crafts, food, games, music, plants, gently used clothing, furniture, household items, and resources to give and share with others in the community. Everything is 100% Free at this market so don't bring anything to sell or trade.
If you don't have anything to bring or don't want anything, no worries! The Really Really Free Market is more than just a place to leave things or take things. It's also a place to experience community and solidarity with your neighbors. Come just to hang out with us, meet new people, catch up with friends and neighbors, and possibly learn something new!
Guidelines:
1) Solidarity not charity.
2) Everything is 100% Free!
No buying, selling, or trading.
3) Items in the designated area/s are free to take unless marked "Really Really Free Market" or "RRFM". Please do not take items that are outside of the designated area/s as these may belong to our skillsharers or performers.
4) Things not picked up/taken back home by the end of the RRFM could possibly be stored for the next RRFM or donated to goodwill, salvation army, etc.
5) Help keep the park clean! If you see trash on the ground, please dispose of it properly and don't leave litter behind when you leave.
“Because there is enough for everyone
Because sharing is more fulfilling than owning
Because corporations would rather see landfills overflow than anyone get anything for free
Because scarcity is a myth constructed to keep us at the mercy of the economy
Because a sunny day outside is better than anything money can buy
Because "free trade" is a contradiction of terms
Because no one should have to do without food, shelter, entertainment, and community
Because life should be a picnic,
but it only will be if we make it happen.”
