Something new! This pair of shaker-inspired cherry nightstands were a custom request for a very special couple. The k***s are hand turned from walnut wood. The drawer slides are quarter sawn white oak and feature novel drawer guides of my own design that are adjustable to keep drawers centered and avoid binding. The drawer face is cherry and the sides, back, and bottom are solid maple wood. These nightstands also include swivel drawer stops to prevent the drawer from accidentally pulling all the way out. Finished with low-VOC hard wax/oil.

So much beauty in wood texture and color. Look at that unique contrast and grain in the dark/light hackberry wood. This particular board was a gift for a friend. When I was laying out the wood pattern for glue up, I really didn’t know how the combination of walnut, maple, padauk, and hackberry would turn out. I think it came together nicely. I plan to make more boards (and some trays - stay tuned) this summer. My goal is to make applied art more affordable for all. Message me if you have a specific request and I may be able to come up with something to suit your needs. I’m currently limited to local sales in the CU area, but that could change. Also, be sure to check out the wonderful plants and other items at plant_mode in Champaign. plant_mode is a treasure for the CU community!

Happy update: the City of Urbana found a perfect spot for the floating bench that we donated a few weeks ago. It is sitting in the hall just outside the city council chambers. If you ever find yourself strolling through city hall, please drop by and say hello to this unique Urbana fixture. Please be sure to have a seat on it. It won’t bite, I promise. I’m so glad this 200 year old piece of legendary hackberry wood will live on for many years to come.

We have received many questions and comments about the floating bench that was pictured here a few days ago. You should know that late this week, we donated this piece to the city of Urbana. It seems fitting for this particular bench to remain part of Urbana’s culture due to the deep history of materials used to create the bench. Urbana was the first Illinois city to receive the “Tree City USA” designation in 1976. The wood used in the bench top is from a Hackberry tree that stood on Judge Joseph W. Sim’s property in Urbana dating back to the 1850’s. This tree was not only a local icon, it was also the first tree to be honored under the city of Urbana’s Legacy Tree Program. The bench is temporarily housed in Urbana’s city hall until a permanent home is determined. We hope you will take a few minutes to see the bench in person when it arrives in its new home. While this bench was already transferred to the city, we expect to create other Sim Hackberry benches and tables this year. Please message us if you are interested in more details!
