Here is our post for today. This one is about different types of therapy for ASD.

There are many different types of therapies available for individuals with autism, and the most effective approach will depend on the individual's unique needs and challenges. Here are a few examples of different types of therapies for autism:

Behavioral therapy: Sometimes reffered to as ABA therapy, this type of therapy is focused on teaching individuals with autism specific skills and behaviors. This might include strategies for improving social interaction, communication, and adaptive living skills. Behavioral therapy can be delivered in a variety of formats, including one-on-one sessions with a therapist, group sessions, or parent training programs.

Speech therapy: Many individuals with autism have difficulty with communication, and speech therapy can help them improve their language skills. Speech therapists may use a variety of techniques, such as picture cards, sign language, or electronic communication devices, to help individuals with autism learn to communicate effectively.

Occupational therapy: Occupational therapy is focused on helping individuals with autism develop the skills they need to function independently in daily life. This might include teaching them how to dress themselves, feed themselves, or use the bathroom independently. Occupational therapists may also work with individuals with autism to develop sensory integration skills, which can help them better manage sensory input from the environment.

Play therapy: Play therapy is a form of therapy that uses play to help individuals with autism develop social skills, communication skills, and emotional regulation skills. Play therapists may use games, toys, or other activities to help individuals with autism learn to interact with others and express themselves in a safe, supportive environment.

Here is today's post! 😁

Financial burden for families.

The financial burden of raising a child with autism can be overwhelming for many families. The costs associated with medical expenses, therapies, specialized education, caregiver support, home modifications, and insurance limitations can quickly add up. Additionally, the potential loss of income due to parents reducing work hours or stopping work altogether to provide care for their child with autism can further strain the family's finances. Families may also face challenges in participating in social and recreational activities, and may require emotional and mental health support for themselves and their child. Planning for the future, including setting up special needs trusts, may also be necessary. All these factors combined can result in significant financial stress and impact a family's financial stability, savings, and retirement contributions, adding to the already demanding responsibilities of caring for a child with autism.

Times are tough, and they can be even tougher for our families with special needs. Be kind and caring! You never know what people are going through. 😁 ✌️ πŸ’•

Grand rising all! This is month post #5 .

Marriage and Special Needs.

Marriages between individuals with special needs children can present unique challenges and rewards. Caring for a child with special needs requires significant physical, emotional, and financial resources, which can place strain on a marriage. Parents may face ongoing medical appointments, therapy sessions, and specialized care for their child, which can impact their time, energy, and relationship dynamics. Additionally, the emotional toll of managing the challenges and uncertainties associated with their child's condition can be overwhelming. This may result in increased stress, communication difficulties, and changes in roles and responsibilities within the marriage.

However, marriages between parents of special needs children can also foster deep bonds and resilience. Many couples find strength and purpose in caring for their child, and develop a unique level of empathy, understanding, and teamwork. They may also find joy and fulfillment in celebrating their child's accomplishments, no matter how big or small. Navigating the complexities of special needs parenting together can strengthen the bond between spouses, as they learn to support each other through the highs and lows.

It's important for parents in such marriages to prioritize self-care and seek support from their communities, including family, friends, and professionals. Taking care of their own physical and mental health can enable parents to better support each other and their child. Open and honest communication, along with regular emotional check-ins, can also foster healthy relationships between spouses. Seeking therapy or counseling can be beneficial for couples to navigate challenges, strengthen their relationship, and ensure that their marriage remains healthy and fulfilling.

So remember, no matter where you are in your journey, stay strong and resilient. You matter and you have an important job to do. ❀️

While autism IS a vast spectrum of different needs and abilities, there are a few things that are common between different people on the spectrum. One such example is either being a Sensory seeker, or a sensory avoider.

Seekers:
Sensory seekers can be very high energy. They often enjoy loud noises, bright lights, moving objects and physical touch like tickling. Sometimes they can have sensory processing disorder, which means they need more than your usual input in order to fulfill the sense they are using for a particular activity. This can sometimes lead to injuries due to a high pain tolerance.

Avoiders:
Sensory avoiders, as you can imagine, are the opposite of our seekers. Their sensory processors are working overtime and they can be very sensitive to noises, visuals, smells etc. You might see someone wearing noise canceling headphones out at a restaurant or perhaps somewhere else you might find unusual. This is to help them not be so overwhelmed by the many sensory inputs out in public. Some inclusive places have sensory friendly rooms where we can take our sensory sensitive littles to have a break from the hustle and bustle. You may find that theaters and certain other entertainment venues offer sensory friendly show times or events. Our own St. Louis Blues hockey team offer sensory bags to sensory sensitive fans who request them.

I've only scratched the surface on these topics but I encourage you to learn more! Remember to be kind when you are out and see kids that may be having sensory troubles, rather it be them having a sensory overload, or that kid who's just being really loud for God knows why! 😁 You never know what they could be going through so give them some grace. ❀️
