Case for displaying Tractor Trailers. He wanted a case for his COEs. Works well for Steering Rigs and Sledsters too. Made from maple. Uses alignment pins and magnets to keep the lid shut.

Different ways of attaching the lid

04/30/2018

I have been building diecast display cases for 20+ years. I started building the cases because I wanted something better to display my collection. It also carries on the family tradition (at least 5 generations) of wood working. At this point I am happy enough with the cases to share with others. I still try new products and techniques, and occasionally come up with a winner. I you have any questions please feel free to ask!

Common features of my display cases:
- Solid wood frame with dovetailed corners.

- The backing is typically a white panel which makes it easier to see the car. Mirrored backing can be used, but no one has asked for a mirrored backing in 5+ years

- Built to fit the customer's specification / cars. Most of the cases I've built hold 1:64 scale cars. A case for a VW Drag Bus is much different than a case for Ferraris. I have built some cases which handle a wide variety of sizes.

- The cells for holding the cars are made from plexiglass. The edges are polished to give a better look and feel.

- The lid has a matching hardwood frame holding a clear plexiglass panel. The corners of the fame are reinforced with special corner nails. The outside of the frame is typically rounded for a cleaner look and appeal.

- The lid is attached to the frame using hidden barrel hinges. It is held in the closed position using rare magnets. Another system that I am experimenting with is using alignment pins and rare earth magnets which allows the lid to be completely removed.

- Cases are mounted to the wall using a cleat system. The cleat is screwed to the wall and the case is hung on the cleat. I have been using this system for 15+ years and never had a problem. A significant advantage of this system is there are no screw heads in the backing to potentially damage the cars.
