Lessons from a Hand Tool 🌀 Two from this morning:

1. You can’t cut deeper into a mortise without first clearing the evidence of your previous work.

2. Trust that when the work gets easier, it only means you’ve done what you needed to get there. It does not mean you have to find a way to make it difficult again.

Just a little shoulder talk. Don’t ask me why I pointed over at my bench, I no longer have a conventional bench 🤣

"It looks like it grew right out of the kitchen floor.” | In December, my partner and I drove this unique (and sturdy) kitchen island from our home in Colorado to Saratoga Springs, New York... (full story on my blog)

I wanted to use this story as an introduction to my new website. I’ve been working hard to create a space that feels more true to myself as a woodworker—now that I’ve gotten to know him much better.

The website includes a Maker’s Journal where stories such as this one will continue to appear. I hope you will join me in this journey as I seek to get us beyond the doom scroll, into a place of true introspection, process and connection.

Not for an effortless life. For a life worth the effort.

Today’s lesson from a hand tool: at times, as you get closer to where you want to go, the flaws will show up louder, the cracks will seem deeper, the deviations more frequent. It can feel like you’re moving backwards, but this is simply the clarity of the shifted perspective. Now you can see what you could not before. This is moving forward. Keep going.

Glad to be back in the shop after a week stuck in front of the computer. Here’s a snippet of real-time flattening a board. Awkward moments included, because life doesn’t care how polished you look when you show up.

Remember to be kind out there. Scary times for a lot of people. Rn sending extra hugs to my trans brothers and sisters. This is getting ridiculous.

I think, maybe, I’m beginning to understand. I don’t mean in my mind, but in my lungs, in my bones… I am the food and the drink, the water and the wind, the fruit fly and the tree. If we are everything, then everything is us, I am everyone, and so are you. To harm another—any other—is to harm ourselves. To help another—any—other, is to help everyone. The disconnect is the heart of violence.

Yukahú: Guak’mun aní (estamos aquí) | Still working, never working “as normal.” I will say more on this piece and the material it’s appearing in later, but it is a piece of Ausubo wood over 200 years old, that was once used as part of the structure of La Princesa, an infamous prison in Borikén. I want to thank my friend and talented woodworker in Puerto Rico for generously entrusting me with this piece. I hope to do it justice.

Proud to be making this custom bokutō (and tantō) for one of our sensei. Has certainly provided some unique challenges, but I am pleased with how the shape and balance are coming along and can’t wait to see her using them in practice! I look forward to making more of these in the future as well.

Soft close hardware will never beat the quiet elegance, dignity and satisfaction of an expertly piston-fitted drawer. It’s the difference between a gimmick and genuine quality, loves ✨. You deserve better.

Slow down with me. 🪓✨ I crave a culture that values the time it takes. To sharpen a tool, to master a skill, to adapt and grow, to grieve, to connect on a deeper level, to see the embers catching on the other side.
