Yesterday’s storms caused a lot of damage throughout the Pittsburgh area. Flooded basements, downed trees, power outages and damage to homes, and we know plenty of people are waking up today trying to figure out where to even start.

So rather than our usual post, we thought we’d share a few things that may help.

First and foremost, make sure your home is safe before worrying about your belongings. Water, electricity, fallen trees and structural damage can create hazards that aren’t always obvious.

Once you know it’s safe, document everything. Take photos and video before you start moving things around or cleaning up. If belongings are wet or damaged, don’t assume they automatically need to go in the trash. Depending on what they’re made of and how they were affected, there may be options for cleaning and restoration.

And keep a running record of what happened, what was damaged, who you’ve talked to and any emergency expenses along the way. When you’re dealing with a lot at once, it’s surprisingly easy to lose track.

For everyone in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities dealing with cleanup today, we hope everyone is safe and getting the help they need.

Here’s the part of contents work nobody likes to talk about: the walkthrough goes great, the pack-out’s done—and then something breaks. A missed piece. A homeowner who’s suddenly lost confidence in you. What you do in that moment decides whether you keep the relationship or lose it for good.

I’m speaking at the Contents Bootcamp on Thursday, July 16. My session: “When Something Goes Wrong: Recovering the Job and the Relationship.”

I’ll get into what actually happens after something goes wrong—the systems that decide whether you recover or lose the client, the conversation you have to have and why how you handle the worst part of the job is what people remember.
