Friends of South Greensburg Park

Friends of South Greensburg Park The unofficial page for South Greensburg Community Park. South Greensburg, PA has a beautiful natural park with acres of lovely woods.

Local treehuggers saved the park from being timbered by corrupt South Greensburg PA council. 🌳

Our city council voted to timber the park. First we were told only dead or unsafe trees would be cut, but they cut down the biggest and best first. Council hired a professional forester to advise them. He told them to leave it alone, it is an "ecological gem." But Council still

sold trees in the park to a lumber company (associated with a friend of one councilman) for $10,000. They did not survey the park and did not have a forestry management plan. The logger marked his own trees. There was no limit on how many trees he could cut, so the park was closed and he could timber for one year. A group of citizens objected and the contract was made "null and void" after council gave the ten grand back. The logger had already cut 90 mature oak and shagbark hickory trees. Although the logging has been stopped, there was a huge mess of branches left behind and damage to the natural environment. Those 90 trees are gone, including one grand oak that was over 200 years old. We want people to be aware to help prevent anything this corrupt from happening here or anywhere else. This park has been enjoyed for generations and we saved it for future generations to come.

I'm hoping I'm not the only one who has spent too long unraveling a strand of string lights, to only find out they don't work. Once I get done saying a few bad words, and resist the impulse to throw the lights in the trash, I remember that they can be dropped off for recycled at the Westmoreland Cleanways Recycling Center. With the help of the Michael Brothers Company proceeds from the lights' recycling will be used to support project Bundle-Up.
