Thinking about the many years of building furniture and cabinets that I have under my belt and thinking about some of my favorite pieces. I think this table that I made for my wife, , for her birthday when she was pregnant with our first baby way back in 1988! Sized to fit a corner in our rented townhouse and built with pine, because we really were into the “country” style back then but also because it was cheap! This table, while not fancy, holds so many memories, we purposely chose not to artificially distress it, so every ding, every scratch bump and dent is a memory. From Zach pushing down too hard on the cowboy hat cookie cutter, to Bryce banging his fork impatiently for another bite of food to my dad helping us move and tripping while carrying the table and dropping it. Birthdays, thanksgivings, Christmas celebrations and just gathering around it for family meals! Now our grandkids love making it into a fort and eating lunch underneath it! Our style has evolved, our family has grown and this table has seen it all. Truly a treasured member of our family!

Once in awhile we get the opportunity to do something truly unique and exciting. This “sofa/bench” was created a few years ago for motors out of Sweden. They were displaying their “super cars” during car week prior to the Concourse d’Elegance in Pebble Beach. Their display was part of the show held at the Quail lodge country club in Carmel Valley. We were privileged to be able to work with in helping to create what went on to win the best display award for that particular event! We also created a couple of transaction counters for the event but this bench was the pop! So fun to work on! Upholstery was expertly handled by Howard’s Upholstery by Ken in Salinas.

Throwing way back to 1985-86 today! Our first home was a duplex at the end of an alley with a single car carport that our landlord allowed me to enclose and use for my shop. I worked my way through college with a couple of small student loans and a lot of hard work. I’d make rocking horses and hutches and put them on consignment in different shops around Arcata and Eureka and pray that they would sell! This generated a couple of commissions as well! Being on the quarter system mad having an actual job difficult so this was the best option. Kudos to my lovely wife who was very patient with me and has always been very supportive of my self-employment exploitative!

In 2024, we plan to host more classes, retreats, and guest presenters.

I, Rori, will have a few Ladies Craft Nights and retreats (Friday, January 26-28 AND February, 2-4).

Paul might be convinced to host a Bird House class.

Anne Delaney, our daughter-in-law, has a business called Empowered Infant Feeding, with a class scheduled for Saturday, January 20th

To start off the year, Neil Ledford will be offering a Beginning Wood Carving class. He says,

"This class will assume the student has no experience in woodcarving-we start from ground zero. We will cover the basics of wood, the tools needed, how to use those tools, and then we will begin the carving journey on a basic project. Our goal will be to complete a carving that you will take home with you. All experience levels are welcome. Young carvers are welcome (12 or older) but must be accompanied by a parent (maturity level and manual dexterity must be sufficient that the individual can safely handle VERY sharp tools).

DO I NEED WOOD CARVING EXPERIENCE TO TAKE THIS CLASS?

Some experience in working with wood projects will be helpful, but not necessary. You will need a willingness to be flexible and try new things. Come with a 'can do' attitude.

Class will be limited in number, so register early. Questions? Call or text Neil at 831-206-0214"

Do you have a skill you want to teach? A class you want to host? A dinner for a small intimate gathering? Contact me for a fee schedule and calendar slots.

Well, here we are on day x of being under an evacuation order. If you zoom in on this photo, you’ll see a yellow shop building and just behind that is a light brown line, that’s the levee and just the other side of that is the very swollen Salinas River! We’re just taking it one day at a time! Our prayers go out to everyone who has already been adversely impacted by this series of storms. Be careful out there! (Picture taken from just outside my shop) also, our property did not flood in 1995 so we aren’t to worried about flooding ourselves.

I’ve been designing, building, installing and repairing kitchen cabinets for over 35 years and I’m not usually too thrilled to have the customers helping me, but every so often I will make an exception! Made a new “oven” door and reinstalled the faucet for these two, my favorite customers ever! If I built your cabinets in the past and you thought you were my favorite customer, think again, even if I may have led you to believe that you were!😁 😂 being a papa is the best!!

Hey…look what I made!!! We’re hosting a wedding reception on October first and I needed to cover the ugly aluminum shop window that’s no longer in use. This piece is a picture of Salinas valley history, the frame is from wood taken from our old water tank, the brown wood in the piece itself is from the top of our old water tank. The red colored wood is from an old railroad freight car, which very well could have hauled Salinas Valley produce and the center square of barn wood came from a barn on the Pedrazzi ranch down River Road. The metal pieces are of course ag pieces. It was nice to take some time to put together something really creative and use up some of my stockpile of reclaimed material.

Giving our walnut tree a much needed trim today. Putting the forklift to work as my mobile work platform. Don’t try this at home! I tell my wife that I wish we had at least one more acre of land so I could justify a tractor but such is not to be, truth be told I don’t want to have to take care of anymore space!😂 this little lift is great for offloading lumber and makes a pretty adequate tractor in a pinch! I hope you all are having an amazing day and enjoying this beautiful weather!

Merry Christmas everyone. We’re slowly winding down 2021 here in the shop and making some time to spend doing really important things, like experiencing puddles with brand new rain boots! We hope you all have a chance in the next two weeks to really focus on your faith, your family and your list of things to be thankful for! Even in these troubling times, we have so much to be thankful for.
