One of my latest acquisitions is this timelessly elegant Maitland-Smith console crafted from mahogany. The top is covered in sienna leather with an embossed edge and gilt border, surrounded by fine wood veneer. As a vintage piece of furniture, there are a few condition issues that I need to point out. Some of the veneer is missing from the back edge of the top (refer to picture 10), but it isn't visible from the front of the console. The section of missing veneer on the right side of picture 10 extends to the top where there is a small indentation, which is visible when looking at the back edge of the console. There is a small area of wear on the front edge. The leather top is in remarkably good condition with no stains or wear (refer to picture 4). Once this console is placed in a room, these flaws will be hardly noticeable, but I want you to aware of them before adding this piece to your collection. There is no drawer in the apron in front. The six legs are elegantly slender, but they are stable and support the top without any shakiness. There is a metal plaque with the Maitland-Smith name attached to the back of the console.

I photographed this console outside on a sunny December afternoon, which gives the wood a warm glow. The color of the wood will invariably look different when viewed in an interior setting under artificial light. Please take this into consideration when matching colors.

This Maitland-Smith lamp is a delightful model that is rarely seen. The giraffe is made from patinated bronze with a verdigris finish mounted on top of a base that appears to be blocks glued together. The shade is made from individually cut pieces of crackled penshell that have been attached to a fiberglass form. A great deal of artisanal work went into creating this lamp, skills that are still being practiced in the Philippines, the country in which this lamp was manufactured. It is a vintage model and is in remarkably good condition. The only issue that I have found is a small hole in the penshell shade. Other than that, it is fully functional. The underside of the base is lined with a beige felt, making it easy to move the lamp around without damaging any surfaces. The Maitland-Smith label is attached to this felt cover.

This is an impressively large and heavy lamp, weighing 20 pounds. The electric cord is a generous 11 feet long, ideal for reaching those faraway outlets. I would recommend using two 25-watt appliance bulbs in the two sockets under the shade. The penshell shade is stationary, being attached firmly in the giraffe's mouth without any movement possible.

The Ocean Club collection by Tommy Bahama Home features their interpretation of island living with the Kowloon dining room chairs. This is a set of two armchairs and four side chairs covered in a beige and brown fabric that feels like polyester. The horizontal wooden slats on the back of each chair make this design truly exceptional and unique. This set was purchased in 2011 at a price of $480 for each armchair and $469 for each side chair, for a total of $2,836. These chairs were manufactured by Lexington Home Brands in China.

Known as the Gabrielle model, this set of eight Theodore Alexander dining room chairs exudes elegance and refinement, and they definitely make a statement! They are made from mahogany with a lovely wood grain and upholstered in a textured cotton fabric. This model is still in production and retails for $3,057 for the armchair and $2,877 for the side chair when purchased directly from Theodore Alexander. The fabric on these chairs was probably a custom order, the standard covering being a plain polyester fabric, and feels wonderful to the touch.
