What is Clean Truck Check?
The California Air Resource Board (CARB) has introduced Clean Truck Check, a program mandating electronic emissions inspections for heavy-duty vehicles traveling in California. This includes vehicles registered both in-state and out-of-state that operate on public roads within California. Officially known as Heavy Duty Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M), Clean Truck Check focuses on reducing emissions from diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 14,000 pounds. The program primarily targets trucks, buses, and motorhomes, which account for the majority of road emissions. CARB notes that while heavy-duty vehicles constitute only 3% of the vehicles on California roads, they generate more than half of the smog-causing pollution and fine particulate matter. To combat this, the state is implementing stricter regulations to decrease emissions and address its substantial air quality concerns.
