The Piano - Part 2
For the table, we cut down the 56” keyboard base down to a more manageable size at 38”. The entire keyboard still fit perfectly inside the base. The sides/legs were also shortened as much as we could, making the end size 38”x26.5”. (Picture with my 4 year old for size reference. ♥️)
Every bit of the table was made from parts of the piano, with only a few pieces of oak leftover. It was stained with Minwax Early American; the detail it brought out in the quarter sawn oak is breathtaking.
For the table top, the keys were all washed and lightly sanded before setting permanently. We took the keyboard cover and cut the face of it off to lay over the keys showing the original finish and piano brand. To finish it off, a custom ordered tempered glass top!
For the coat rack, the music ledge was used to make a 6” shelf running along the top. We added cast iron hooks and a French cleat to the back for easy, sturdy hanging.
I’ve added a slide of the owners story as well. This old upright piano clearly was well loved!
This was one of the most challenging but fun projects. I loved getting to tackle it and see it take shape. It took about 4 weeks of drawing out plans for the table, fitting and forcing myself to make cuts (once that cut is made…), putting it together, taking it apart and a lot of head scratching before finally committing to putting it together for good. In the end, I coulda cried when the glass top went on. Thank you for allowing me to do this, Pastor Sheila!
