The Piano - Part 2

For the table, we cut down the 56” keyboard base down to a more manageable size at 38”. The entire keyboard still fit perfectly inside the base. The sides/legs were also shortened as much as we could, making the end size 38”x26.5”. (Picture with my 4 year old for size reference. ♥️)
Every bit of the table was made from parts of the piano, with only a few pieces of oak leftover. It was stained with Minwax Early American; the detail it brought out in the quarter sawn oak is breathtaking.

For the table top, the keys were all washed and lightly sanded before setting permanently. We took the keyboard cover and cut the face of it off to lay over the keys showing the original finish and piano brand. To finish it off, a custom ordered tempered glass top!

For the coat rack, the music ledge was used to make a 6” shelf running along the top. We added cast iron hooks and a French cleat to the back for easy, sturdy hanging.

I’ve added a slide of the owners story as well. This old upright piano clearly was well loved!

This was one of the most challenging but fun projects. I loved getting to tackle it and see it take shape. It took about 4 weeks of drawing out plans for the table, fitting and forcing myself to make cuts (once that cut is made…), putting it together, taking it apart and a lot of head scratching before finally committing to putting it together for good. In the end, I coulda cried when the glass top went on. Thank you for allowing me to do this, Pastor Sheila!

The Piano - Part 1

This old upright piano was brought to us years ago and has been sitting in storage for an embarrassing length of time. The owner got a hold of us this last summer with a game plan for what she wanted done with it: a coat rack and a coffee table. The piano came out of her childhood church, Wyaconda Methodist Church in northern Missouri and held many dear memories for her.

The tear down of the piano took a few days and included a skid steer, a sawsall and a sledgehammer. Dismantling the keyboard, we found old playing cards cut to level out the keys. The cards and the keys were saved for the table top. The last time it had been tuned was 1999 and the harp was saved for use as a garden trellis. We utilized as much of the beautiful oak out of it as possible, most of it was solid quarter sawn oak and the back posts with the handles were actually sycamore. The wood used in this piano was gorgeous, right down to parts never seen, with birds eye maple veneer. Every piece was stripped and sanded. The door and ledge were used to make the coat rack; the appliqué was reglued and veneer repaired. I had some help with the finishing on it, she learned how to fill holes.

When it came to the getting the table figured out and put together, it ended up being pretty time consuming. I didn’t want to lose the integrity of the piano and basically came up with a mini-version. Originally the table would have been the length of the piano, 56” and would have been massive. We cut down the base and the keyboard top to 38” and also cut down the length of the legs and far as we could go without ruining the detail of the spindles. We made a box for the table top out of the lid from the piano. The moving handles were salvaged, cut down and used as structure for the back of the table. The cast iron pedals were shined and cut down to permanently fasten on. One pedal at one point of its life had been broken off and roughly welded back together, so it sat wonky when it was reattached, adding to the character.

If you’ve been in the market for chairs, of any kind, you’ve probably found they’re expensive and cheaply made. Quality craftsmanship is a thing of the past when it comes to chairs, they’re disposable garbage now (especially if you have kids). These are just a few of the chairs we’ve had come through the shop lately. Before you pitch the old, let us breathe life back into them to last another decade or more! The new just doesn’t compare to the old built to withstand the daily rough wear of life.

This was a Christmas miracle!

An Eldredge treadle machine that was pulled out of a barn. It had extensive water and animal damage. The top’s veneer was beyond repair and rust had seized the machine and treadle up. One of the curved doors was missing, as was the front door/panel and the table for the sewing machine itself is badly warped. All would be impossible to replicate without costing a fortune. We were able to re-veneer the top lid to match and fabricated a fixed front panel to best replace what the original may have looked like. The gesso appliqués were falling apart and half missing. There wasn’t enough to salvage to replicate them and it was impossible to find any exact match. They were replaced with wooden appliqués that matched the woodwork. The drawers were in great shape and all there, they all got reglued and colored to match the cabinet. The machine itself was ate up by rust. We used a can of lubricant and was able to get it turning again! It does not sew anymore, but the needle does go up and down. Using steel wool and a grinder brush, we got rid of as much rust as we could and sprayed a clear coat over it. The treadle itself was also cleaned and the rust removed so it spins and wheels move freely. We sprayed it black again and repainted the gold lettering. After a lot of glue and scrubbing, the old girl shined up pretty nice! This was one that ended up being a joy to bring back to life.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck with us and been so very patient with us the last few years. We appreciate it and wish you a happy New Year!

We can add spinning wheels to our repertoire! Most of this spinning wheel was brought to us in pieces in bucket. It was a little intimidating at first, but once repairs started and the natural beauty and hand carved artistry was uncovered…it was a fun little project! Thank you so much for trusting us to restore your family treasure, Andrea!

This gorgeous mahogany chest of drawers was brought to us by someone very dear. It was a project I was determined to see through and restore its natural beauty best I could. It had what we could only assume was battery acid damage on the top and front drawer face. The veneer damage was extensive and we repaired it best we could without replacing it. The base and all the drawers had fallen apart, everything got re-glued and finished and the brass pulls were polished.

Hello friends,
After 3 years of being overwhelmed with work, we are finally at a place with time and shop room to take in more furniture. We are grateful you have entrusted us with your beloved pieces.

This is a favorite that was refinished last year. No repairs needed; just stripped, sanded and finished to bring its beauty back.

As always, we appreciate your continued business!

Nicky

We are still working but we are not taking in any new work until further notice. Our work backlog is approximately 1 year, possibly more at this point. Sadly because there aren't many craftsmen left, if any, in our area to do high end restoration, it's mostly our business that has taken the brunt of this workload. A personal situation also dictates this move as well. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for trusting your treasured family heirlooms to us.

Eh, took a hunk of the burned up table from the last post a few days ago, and made an art piece for the wall for the customer.

I amuse myself…

Oh, the background that I mounted the piece on in the frame? I blackened that with a torch… 😊

A neat little drop leaf arts and crafts table. The owners brought it in and lol apparently there was a near disaster with a candle a number of years ago. Anyhoo, we sectioned it all up to smithereens and cut the crispy parts out, fabricated some new ones and put it all together. Nicky put a pretty spectacular color match on the replaced section and made it pretty again. The outside band was put together with some prehistoric draw bolts that were not reusable, so I joined it together with some Dutchman inlays.

Thanks for looking.
