A NOA Living classic, Ripple’s unique succession of color variations create a rhythmic, yet calming vibe. Its long, angular shapes imply a pattern that expands beyond the boundaries of the rug and reference traditional African designs, with a graphic, modern twist. Behold the classic cast bronze leopard, by the Edo People of Benin! In Edo, as in many other cultures, the leopard is conceptualized as an icon of courage, strength and perseverance. By tradition, if a young boy desires to be king someday, he must hunt and kill such an animal to prove his future leadership skills. Once he achieves this rite of passage, fellow Edo People reward the boy with a statue such as this. As hunting these beasts has been long forbidden in this region, these leopard statues are now retained as decorative pieces by the wealthy within Edo society. Placed near an entrance, this powerful guardian is guaranteed to protect your home from evil spirits and other unwelcome guests!

Another gorgeous design from our new Edge Collection, “Echo” begins with a long, luxurious wave, generating an imaginary sound which travels in expanding ripples. The effect is languid and sensuous, creating a calming visual rhythm across the surface of the rug. Made of 100% virgin New Zealand wool, Echo’s sensuous ripples are a luxurious treat for barefoot feet! See this rug and other beauties online at noaliving.com or in our Raleigh showroom.

We love a pot with a great face and a big belly! This charismatic vessel is handbuilt from clay by the Azande ethnic group from Congo. It is a male figure, marked by rounded lips, a protruding nose, closed eyes, beveled headdress, and two, stick-thin arms wrapped comfortably around his fat, playful belly. On the front lie a series of raised bumps resembling a wide necktie that function both aesthetically and as a grip mechanism when held. The Azande are an agrarian people with long held traditions in ceramics and pottery dating back to the Iron Age. This vessel is employed for consumption of local wine and herbal remedies in the home and during traditional rituals. Drop by our Raleigh showroom to see this and other amazing pots from West Africa!

Our new Edge Collection collection features three rugs that look quite different but have the same conceptual starting point: An edge is created. The rug grows out from it. Featured here is “Hashi”, which means both boundary and bridge in Japanese and is also the Japanese word for chopsticks. Our “Hashi” rug begins with one fringed edge—a play on traditional carpet fringe. Their exaggerated width and length emphasize the cartoon-like, cutout quality of these super-fringes. They serve as the starting point for beams of bright, translucent color extending out from the edge and refracted at odd angles, playfully crossing over each other to span the width of the rug. The design is both lively and colorful yet compatible with many palettes, adding a modern, dynamic touch to any space. Hand-knotted in 100% virgin New Zealand wool.

Bold abstraction in our storefront window gains extra energy when flooded with warm afternoon light. The rhythmic topography of “Maze”, in white on black and black on green, resonates with the geometric designs of classic Nupe pottery from Nigeria. Some things never get old—or perhaps they just age well! Drop by our Raleigh store to see these and other exquisitely hand-knotted carpets and spectacular pots!
