I've been wasting my life.

This summer, I concentrated almost exclusively on work to the exclusion of my relationships with wife, dog, friends, and myself. I'm no better off now than if I had worked a consistent 40ish hours a week. I'm no richer, more connected, or farther ahead on my work schedule. I'm poorer, more estranged, and more burnt out than I should be at this time of the year. And today was my first ride of 2021, it was splendid.

If you're doing one thing, to the exclusion of everything else, you're wasting your life. Do more with the time you've got and you'll have more of everything, including time.

On my favorite solstice and the longest day of the year, I want to remind myself and everyone around me to remember to take a break occasionally.
We like to take some time off every three or four months, it's a nice pause to relax and refocus. Work is fun but it's also healthy for me to disconnect from it occasionally and stare into space for a bit.
This is Mt Rainier in the foreground and Mt Adams in the background as seen from the plane in the way home from a brief trip to Dallas and Houston to celebrate 's 40th birthday.

I wish I hadn't waited: a drywall tape holder seems like an unnecessary luxury but it's worth it to avoid the frustration of only having two hands for a three-handed job.
Even if you only apply the smallest roll a year (~100') this $12 tool will be well worth your while, trust me.

Arizona has some pretty cracking textures!
I'm going to bring some of these back to the PNW to integrate into my projects. Let's hope that they don't all become mossy mats.

Deck screen, part 5.
Vanity shots and final details:
I filled in every other interstitial opening in the west facing lattice to provide a bit more privacy. The horizontals received this treatment on the outside and the verticals on the inside.
All the material except for the lattice received at least one coat of teak oil which brought a warm, though temporary, shine.
Slides 5, 6, & 10 show the drip edge detail that I worked into the parapet and top railing caps. This should help deflect water out and away.
I'm really happy with the details and how they turned out. I'm excited to return for periodic maintenance!

Deck screen, part 4.
After long last, some finishing shots of the parapet wall with and without a coat of teak oil.
This will require regular maintenance but it's the most natural finish that we could get away with.
Vanity shots to follow in part 5. (Not in several months, I promise!)

Deck screen, part 3.
After completing the parapet cap rail replacement I laid out for the posts that formed the deck screen. I was motivated and removed the bevel under the posts, pre-finished the spot and the bottoms of the posts, and pocket screwed them with some 5-5/8" R4s.
The client and I decided to have the screen step down by half, round the corner, and then step down by a third. This provides some privacy and visual interest.
After fastening all the posts and securing the top rails, I added stops and in-filled with cedar lattice. All the posts and lattice is built from clear cedar and the top rails are right knot cedar.

Last week's deck screen, part 2.
I couldn't get the miter to close correctly with the angle and the inner and outer point all coming together seamlessly so I threw the error to the outside where it would be the least visible. The inside corner will be seen, the miter is relatively tight and the outside won't be seen up close. Notice that the drip edge detail doesn't line up when viewed up close.
Once I trimmed the excess and have the whole thing a good sand, the error is hardly noticable.
Once all the hard edges were routed and sanded, the cap was roughly complete.

Last week's project: replace the parapet cap before adding a privacy screen in the community.
The existing cap had warped, was two pieced, and had not been finished. This location receives pretty exterior exposure year round so only a few year was too much.
I found straight-ish tight knot cedar and milled it to a matching profile with including the drip edge detail. Upon removing the existing cap, I found that it was trapping water so before I replaced the cap I taped the top of the parapet wall with . Then I massaged the miter and clamped it overnight with some Mar-Clamps.
Part two, next.
