Things to keep in mind when hiring a contractor:
1. check for license and insurance
2. ask who will be doing the actual work?
3. do they sub most of the work out?
4. do they show up when scheduled?
5. do they finish the job in a timely manner?
6. ask for references unless already referred from a friend who had work done by the contractor.

Hopefully these small points will help you in choosing the right contractor for your job.
