At Modtique Boutique our mission is to breathe new life into the forgotten by repurposing, or up-cycling, a variety of vintage items into new and imaginative pieces of useful art. We strive to provide quality in all of the items we up-cycle whether

modernizing antiques or reinventing discarded pieces in unique ways. Merging functionality with style, we hope you find our items to be one of a kind and that you fall in love with them just as we have. Our goal will be to sponsor a child to go to camp through the American Diabetes Association. This is an organization very dear to our hearts.

🍷 From Wine Barrel to Rolling Outdoor Table 🍷

There's something special about giving new life to a piece with a story.

This commissioned project started as a well-used wine barrel that had clearly seen its share of good vintages. After plenty of sanding, custom stain mixing, outdoor-grade paint, and multiple coats of protective exterior poly, this barrel began its transformation into a functional outdoor table on wheels.

One of our favorite moments during the restoration happened while the freshly stained barrel sat in the sunshine to dry. As the wood warmed up, the unmistakable aroma of wine emerged from deep within the staves—a reminder of the barrel's previous life and the history hidden beneath years of wear.

Projects like this are why we love what we do. Every scratch, stain, and imperfection tells a story, and preserving that character while creating something beautiful and useful is what Modtique Boutique is all about.

One of our favorite ways to bring character into raw wood is an old-school technique using a simple mix of vinegar and steel wool 🪵

When combined, they create a natural aging solution that reacts with the tannins in the wood, giving it that beautifully weathered, timeworn look—without paints or stains. Every piece turns out a little different depending on the wood species, which is part of what makes it so special.

We don’t use this method on everything, but when the right piece comes along, it’s the perfect way to add depth, history, and a touch of rustic charm. It’s amazing how something so simple can completely transform wood into something that looks like it’s been around for generations.

✨ Furniture Flip Reveal ✨

What a transformation!

This beautiful Century Furniture table has been given a fresh new life while preserving the timeless character that made it worth saving in the first place.

The top and drawer front were carefully refinished in Early American stain, bringing out the warmth and natural beauty of the wood grain. The base was updated in a soft, classic green that complements the rich wood tones perfectly, creating a look that feels both timeless and current.

To finish it off, the original hardware was upgraded with a rubbed bronze powder-coated finish, adding durability and a sophisticated touch that ties the entire piece together. Even the original casters were preserved, maintaining the charm and functionality of this well-crafted piece.

From scratched and tired to elegant and refreshed, this table is proof that quality furniture deserves a second chance.

✨ Before the Transformation ✨

Sometimes all it takes is a little vision to see the potential hiding underneath years of wear.

When we brought this Century Furniture table home, it had its share of scratches, finish damage, and signs of everyday life. But quality craftsmanship never goes out of style. The solid construction, classic lines, and charming brass casters told us this piece deserved to be saved rather than replaced.

The refinishing process started with careful cleaning, repairs, and plenty of sanding to remove the tired finish and reveal the beauty underneath. The original hardware was removed and sandblasted to create the perfect surface for powder coating later in the restoration process. Every project has a stage where it looks worse before it looks better—and this one was no exception!

We can't wait to share the finished result. It's amazing what a little elbow grease, creativity, and patience can do for a well-made piece of furniture.

📖 The Story Behind This Century Furniture Table 📖

Before we share the refinishing process, let's take a moment to appreciate the history behind this beautiful piece.

This table was crafted by Century Furniture, a North Carolina company founded in 1947 that quickly earned a reputation for producing some of America's finest residential furniture. Century became known for combining traditional craftsmanship with timeless design, creating pieces that were built to last for generations.

This particular table reflects the elegant traditional styling that was popular during the late 20th century. Features such as the turned legs, brass casters, shaped gallery-style top, and single drawer are inspired by classic English and American furniture designs that have remained in style for centuries. Pieces like this were often used as lamp tables, tea tables, or accent tables in formal living rooms and sitting areas.

Unlike much of today's mass-produced furniture, Century pieces were designed with longevity in mind. Quality materials, sturdy construction, and attention to detail allowed them to become heirloom-quality furnishings that could be passed from one generation to the next.

When we were gifted this table, we immediately recognized the craftsmanship and character beneath the worn finish. While styles evolve over time, well-made furniture never goes out of fashion. Our goal was to preserve the integrity and history of the piece while giving it a fresh look for modern homes.

It's always rewarding to bring a piece like this back to life and continue the story that began decades ago.

✨ Progress update on this dresser set ✨

This one has been a true labor of love—and an honor. These are commissioned dressers that we were trusted to completely transform, and we don’t take that lightly.

Every single drawer—inside and out—has been hand sanded down to bare wood. And with this many drawers… that’s no small task 😅

The best part? Underneath all that old finish is beautiful solid maple, and even some gorgeous curly maple grain hiding in a few of the drawer fronts. Totally worth the effort to bring that character back to life.

This project has been all about teamwork + a whole lot of elbow grease, but we’re officially past the toughest part 🙌

Next up: tackling the sides and tops to bring it all together.

✨ Before ➡️ After ✨

This little end table had great bones but was definitely feeling a bit dated with its heavy wood tones and worn finish. We saw the potential right away though—and gave it a whole new life!

After a full refresh, it’s now a light, bright, and modern piece with a soft neutral base, a beautifully updated top, and a fun pop of personality on the lower shelf. It went from overlooked to a statement piece that fits perfectly in today’s homes.

Proof that even the most tired pieces just need a little vision (and a lot of love) 💛
