This big piece of wood needs to go!
117" long, 40" at the wide end, 24" at the narrow end, and
just a touch less than 3" thick. It is a local slab of Live Oak. I fumed it for several days. The fuming process uses ammonia in an enclosed space with trays of ammonia, the fumes of the ammonia reacts with the natural tannins in the wood and turns it a dark chocolate color. The fuming has almost no effect on the sapwood, (the wood behind the bark of a tree) so it has the lighter colored wood on the sides. The second pic I wetted it with lacquer thinner to show the color it will be when finished. We sanded it about 4 years ago just after it was sawn, while still measured a fairly high moisture content..It is fully dry now. Wood shrinks unevenly as it dries, which on this slab has produced a sort of washboard surface to it or perhaps more similar windblown sand. The uneven surface is not for everyone, but it is a part of this slab. There are flat slabs for the people who desire them, this one is as it should be. Can be used for a tabletop, bartop, or will make a great coffee table to go with a 10' or 12' sofa.
Re-organizing the shop to make space for new machinery. This slab must go! Will entertain any reasonable offer!
