Lincoln Land ABATE presented two motorcycle safety & awareness sessions to high school Driver Ed students yesterday. Their teacher reminded them that even non‑riders play an important role — because one distracted moment behind the wheel can cause an accident.
As May marks Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, we’re joining nationwide efforts urging all motorists to eliminate distractions, check blind spots, and stay alert as more riders return to the roads.

🚗 Distracted Driving Puts Everyone at Risk — Especially Stranded Motorists

Every time you pick up your phone, look away from the road, or let your attention drift, you’re not just risking your own safety — you’re putting stranded motorists on the shoulder in real danger. Teens in our Driver Education class are learning that staying focused, slowing down, and moving over when someone is stopped on the side of the road can prevent serious crashes and save lives.

Let’s build good habits now: stay alert, put the phone away, and give stranded drivers, emergency personnel, and police officers the space they need to get home safely.

What an impactful day at ABATE Legislative Day! Our Illinois State Legislators had a blast checking out the Driver Education theme bike. Legislators loved gathering around it, and it made for a powerful moment highlighting how committed we all are to safer roads and stronger driver education. State Senator Steve McClure

Another day, another high school Driver Ed class learning how to keep our motorcyclists safe. ABATE talked about the big one today — those left‑turn crashes at intersections. Most motorcycle accidents happen when a driver turns left in front of a rider, so we reminded students to slow down, keep your head on a swivel, and make sure that “little dot” in the distance isn’t a bike coming their way.

Four ABATE presentations, tons of energy, and one big takeaway for the students today: keep that head on a swivel at every intersection. These classes were engaged and ready to become safer drivers around motorcycles. Great day all around.

Downed power lines + car crashes = a lot more common than you think.
And for teen drivers, knowing what to do can be lifesaving.

Today, Dillon Meier, Lineman and Electric Department Supervisor for the City of Altamont, spoke with young drivers about what happens when a crash brings down a power line — and how to stay safe in those critical moments.

Distress Bandanna followed with two teen driver safety presentations focused on distracted driving and the choices that keep everyone on the road safer.

Stay in the car. Call 911. Keep others away.
Electricity is silent, invisible, and deadly — but the right decisions protect lives.
