Today I’m embarking on a project that I have been gathering parts for over a year. Last year I was shocked to find a 1978 Fender Jazz bass neck that was played by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth . It was sold by her studio and certified, so I jumped on it. Later research would show that it is from her “Ice Cube” bass used on the 1992 Dirty tour. My original goal was to recreate the bass by building a body and finishing it to match the pictures, until I came across an actual 1978 Jazz bass body refinished in Aztec Gold with the original neck plate?! So now that I had a legit 78 Jazz bass the final impossible part to find was the giant brass fender bridge. Long story short, I put the word out and a friend from Switzerland found one and was by chance flying to Boston in the next two weeks! I choose a set of Curtis Novak® Classic Pickups inc Thunderbirds to complete the theme. Since the body is a refin I can justify routing for the pickups and I decided on a brushed gold gaurd rather than filling the pickguard holes. Kim Gordon and Sonic Youth were a huge influence on me growing up and I can’t wait to bring this serendipitous project to life. (If you’ve made it this far, I can’t play Sonic Youth on this post because I’m a business account, so just go listen to them) 🪐
