Tennen Studio was founded by Ethan Wessel and Sarah Swartz Wessel in 2001. The studio has evolved from an architectural design firm to an interdisciplinary firm that designs buildings, landscapes, spaces, furniture, and objects. The culture and design sensibilities of Japan - honesty of materials, minimalism, care, connection to nature and the changing seasons- are guiding principles for the work

of Tennen Studio. We pursue simplicity in our design work, both as an economy of gesture, as well as a removal of the non-essential. We believe this leads to timelessness and provides for a heightened awareness of the senses. We push new ideas and technologies, while embracing the things that time cannot change – natural light, change of seasons, and the inherent sensual qualities of materials. In our work process, the distinction between designing and making is blurred. The reality of crafting and building inspires the design process, and design inspires the making.

As anyone close to me knows, my desks at my home studio and office studio are typically covered in piles of notes and samples and sketches and books and letters and paperwork and incense and a couple of days worth of empty afternoon green tea glasses. I have a lot of different things going on and I work best that way. But when it’s time to start design on a new house, the ritual of clearing my drawing table at home is a welcome change and the threshold to a different mental space, which I will occupy over days, early in the mornings and into the wee hours of night. As the concepts develop over days the classical music gives way to rap and the pristine desk becomes a field of trace paper and pencil and marker. And on this desk clearing day, a light rain is falling. A dream.
