This quote has been a staple in my talks for years because the power behind it.

Emotional imprints last for a very long time because we are emotional people! Never underestimate the positive power you have on someone's life by simply being there for them. Why do you think you can go months and even years without seeing someone then pick right back up as soon as you see them? Emotions and feelings run deep by connecting us together.

As you read this and look at the picture...imagine I am some form of conflict.

It could be with a significant other, friend, child, co-worker, anyone. Where would you stand in that room in relation to me based on how you feel about conflict?

I do this activity with groups & often have people stand right near me or literally hiding behind furniture.

Ready for a Conflict?
1) Decide whether to engage or not (Not every battle needs to be fought)
2) Don't engage unless emotions are lowered
3) Ask open ended questions that attempt to understand and not point fingers

Whether you are on a team or not, we still have the ability to influence and impact people. We are not meant to walk this Earth alone! Getting along with people and having effective teams is not easy just takes a lot of work. Take the time to empathize with those around you and see the world through their eyes. Then you can take the steps to motivate them to constantly be striving for their best because they...are...worth...it.

Another aspect of what I do involves personal coaching for clients in-person or electronically.

This is a newer endeavor that can produce big results for key people. My background is communication skills in relationship to leadership. Coaching gives the client and myself 1-on-1 time to really form a relationship and talk about practical steps and goals to improve a situation or nudge someone to the next step.

Public speaking anxiety, making messages stick, interacting with groups, nonverbal communication, giving speeches and writing relevant messages!

The Technology Conundrum.

I always make it a point to use some type of visual to accent my presentations...simply to give the audience a break from looking at me! However, some speakers over-rely on technology and if a video doesn't play or something else happens, it can derail the presentation. I always make it a point to say 'I can live without this visual' if something fails...which it has. I've shown up to event sites and no one has a clue how to use any of the technology, the cords don't work, my music won't play, the images are distorted...you name it! However, sometimes just a powerful voice and some great storytelling is all the audience needs.

On with the show!

Remember this quote the next time you travel...or see your significant other...or interact with your child...or check out at Publix....or at the gym....or sitting on an airplane...or interacting with a customer...or see someone walking behind you toward the same door you're going through....or interact with a teacher....or anywhere.

Situations may change but the message is universal.

My biggest audience hope is that you learn to grow...think....and act differently as a result of this presentation.

A Young Jim. Pictured here is 20-year-old me in front of Buckingham Palace. My cousin worked for Barclay Bank in London and arranged a two-week internship for me at Cohn and Wolfe PR Agency in London back in Summer 2006. This is what I call the crossroads of my life. I was 2-years into my Public Relations degree at UF and needed to start planting some seeds with a future career. I knew deep down I wanted to become a speaker but also knew PR could be a more stable, immediate career choice. My internship was an amazing experience (and I was even invited back!) but at the beginning of Junior year at UF...it became clear I was meant to be a speaker when friends of mine crossed paths with upcoming speaker Jon Gordon, recommended I email him....and 13 years later here we are.

Always...always...always explore your options, test the waters, experience variety but trust your gut and know your purpose!
