Finally finished our table after what seems like 3 months. It passed the test and is strong enough for the whole family.

I Tried a lot of new things, made a lot of mistakes, but we are excited to have our new family table!

The most important thing is that big momma is happy (I think).

So a huge part of woodworking is trying new things, making mistakes and learning from those mistakes in order to get better. That has definitely been the case with this project. Since it is for my own house, I have tried new techniques and tools, as well as new types of wood and finish.

This table top I spent hours planing and sanding. While planing it, I had the blade too deep and had a bunch of tear out. I decided to use a wood/grain filler to fill those gouges and then sand hoping the dark brown filler would add some accent and maybe be hidden a little by the stain.

In the end we did not like the look of the brown spots on the table top. So I debated on how to go about fixing this. I ended up grabbing the belt sander and went back for another 4 hours of sanding to get down below the tear out. I am so glad I did this because it looks so much better!

The picture doesn’t do it justice of how much better it looks due to poor lighting. But I am very happy now and can’t wait for it to be done and in our house.

Had some helpers working on the table last night. They helped me trim the table top to final size, helped with sanding and helped clean up. I taught them about my hand plane and card scraper as well. I love when they come help me and I get to teach them a little about something I am passionate about.

I am trying some new techniques with this table since it is for our own house. I dialed in my hand plane to take down the initial high spots which saved a ton of sanding time. And I used a bunch of half lap joinery and dowels instead of using screws on the table base. This has been a fun build and can’t wait to see the finished product!

Making some progress on our dining table build. I am having a lot of fun with this one. My goal is to not use any screws in this table. The whole base is done with half lap joinery and when I get everything lined up I will use glue and dowels to secure everything. The top is made of ash and it will be an 8’ table.

Finished up this double vanity! Absolutely love how it turned out!

The top is made from hard maple slabs that I milled down and glued up. I used penetrating epoxy sealer and marine varnish to finish the top. The face frame, cabinet doors and drawers are also made from hard maple.

This one was full of learning experiences and new materials, but I definitely enjoyed making this and hopefully have more projects like this in the future.

Update on the vanity. It’s been a lot more work than anticipated. But I’m so excited to see it coming together!
