A type of malware that locks computer files and demands a fee for their release has successfully targeted Apple computers.

The security researchers from Palo Alto Networks believe it is the first time has appeared on Macs.

The KeRangers malware was hidden in a version of a BitTorrent client called Transmission.

The makers of Transmission and Apple say they have taken steps to stop the malware spreading.

It is not clear how many people have been affected.

Dupplica Online Backup Explained

Each day individuals, businesses, and organizations risk losing their data if they do not have a backup plan. Inadvertent deletion, corrupted disks, and drive failure are some of the many reasons for data loss. In the case of businesses, this can lead to loss of revenue or worse. Since we are dependent on electronic forms of data, it is prudent to opt for an online backup solution.

What are some of the benefits of online backup?

A business can be well prepared with a cloud backup system in place. It has many practical advantages as compared to traditional backup methods.

Online backup is easier since backups are fully automated on a regular basis. The frequency of backup can be set so that you don’t have to worry about any manual intervention.
Online backup is safer and puts you into total control of the process.
All cloud backups are encrypted and can only be accessed by your own password, which makes it one of the most secure ways to backup your data.
Data is stored at various locations, making it highly unlikely to lose data in the event of a natural disaster. Your backups are safe and can be transferred back to your PC or network at any time. Files can be restored almost instantly.
Backing up your data is essential. Contact Dupplica to learn more about the various ways of ensuring that your critical business documents remain safe and secure.

Start protecting your data today.

Sincerely,

With all the stories about hackers these days, is online backup safe to use?

It’s easy to understand why anyone would have concerns with “cloud-based” services, given all the stories you hear about government agencies and large corporations getting hacked.

If these big guys can’t stop the hackers, how safe is my data in the hands of a small commercial entity?

While it’s true that nothing on the Internet is un-hackable, the real concern is: “Will my data be a target?”

Random acts of hacking are completely different from targeted hacks, such as the ones you often hear about in the media.

Sophisticated hacking syndicates don’t waste time on targets where they don’t know what’s on the other side. Hackers know that they can grab valuable data from government agencies and large corporations, so it’s worth the time and effort to make them a target.

The real question you need to ask yourself when it comes to backing up and securing your data is, “Are they better equipped to protect my data than I am?”

For the tech-savvy crowd, the answer may be no, but for most people the clear answer is yes; these companies that make their living providing secure online storage of data are more focused on security and fighting hackers than you’ll ever be.

Any of these online services can be “hacked,” which would generally only provide access to a large amount of encrypted data. This would require the hackers to spend an unknown amount of time attempting to decrypt the data just to see what they were able to steal — that’s just not what smart thieves do.

Keep in mind: Your small data set among millions of others would also have to somehow become a specific target.

It’s not that these online service aren’t hackable; they just aren’t that attractive of a target.

Most people don’t encrypt their data on their own computers, but all of the online backup services that I am aware of do.

When you use an online backup service, your files are encrypted on your own machine before they are uploaded via a secure connection to the company’s storage servers.

Keep in mind, you’re balancing what is technically possible against what is most likely to happen.

Using an external hard drive connected to your computer will certainly remove the risk of a hacker compromising an online service, but it’s of little use if you’re a victim of theft, fire, flooding, ransomware attacks or other more common scenarios for the average user.

The ultimate backup scenario uses the 3-2-1 method: 3 copies on 2 different devices, with 1 copy off-site

As mentioned in the email we sent on October 26th, we will stop access to the web portal from insecure browsers on 19th November.

A small percentage of Dupplica customers are using old insecure browsers to access Dupplica , these use TLS 1.1 or lower. It is in the interests of all users to update to a secure browser and keep all personal information safe, including your files on Dupplica.

For your benefit, there is a full breakdown of which browsers support ‘TLS 1.2’ here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:TLS/SSL_support_history_of_web_browsers
